ICF is at the forefront of preparing leading-edge technical and policy analyses, identifying resilience solutions, and implementing programs to decarbonize our economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and advance climate adaptation.

ICF is hiring multiple positions to assist with research, data analysis, technical reviews, and related activities to support our climate change work. These positions will focus on greenhouse gas accounting and management, climate change adaptation and resilience, and supporting various clients with sustainability goal-setting and performance management. The positions will have a focus on quantitative analyses and synthesizing research and data through statistical analyses, data visualization, and modeling.

The Climate Change & Sustainability Researcher role is is an entry-level position, intended for candidates who have 0-1 years of experience and are available to start working during Summer 2025. The entry salary will typically be in the low to mid $60s, depending on qualifications. This position will be based in ICF’s Crystal City office (Arlington, VA) with a hybrid work arrangement (i.e., minimum 2 days in the office; the other days may be remote or in the office).

Basic qualifications:

  • A completed Bachelor’s degree by Summer 2025 in Environmental Data Science, Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental or Energy Engineering, Economics, Chemistry, Math, Statistics, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Climate Science, Environmental Policy, or similarly related field.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in climate change or sustainability topics.
  • Comfort performing quantitative analyses as well as with managing and analyzing large datasets.
  • Comfort working with quantitative data analysis tools, particularly Microsoft Excel, R, and/or Python for advanced statistical analysis, data visualization, and modeling.
  • The ability to use research and data to help “tell a story” and provide salient information with which our clients can make decisions.
  • Comfort reading and interpreting technical scientific information.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, including excellent writing and oral communication skills.

Candidates are encouraged to highlight, in their resume, any experience with the following:

  • Sustainability planning
  • Programming experience
  • Climate change adaptation topics
  • Vulnerability or risk assessment
  • Developing greenhouse gas inventories or estimating greenhouse gas reductions
  • Familiarity with Paris Agreement and/or IPCC guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories
  • Decarbonization topics
  • Life-Cycle analysis
  • Climate change impacts, and resilience solutions, for the energy sector and utilities
  • Client engagement
  • Experience communicating complex topics to general audiences Collaborating with cross-functional teams with diverse expertise.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.

  • The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is:
  • $59,837.00 - $101,722.00
