Position Overview:

Support the continuing development and implementation of the materials chemistry platform (part of the Steelcase Design for Environmental strategy) and other Global Environmental Sustainability initiatives.  Review collected formulation data provided by suppliers and chemical manufacturers while conducting thorough research and analysis to determine the impact to human and environmental health.  Consult with product development teams on material selection and possible changes to production processes to yield a more environmentally friendly product.  Research and provide expertise on viable alternatives to chemicals of concern.

Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct material analysis, evaluate and report on formulation data provided by Steelcase suppliers and their subsequent suppliers
  • Evaluate new and existing materials based on their human and environmental health hazard potential
  • Support the Steelcase supply chain teams in the obtainment of accurate chemical information from suppliers
  • Guide product development teams on material selection and product design
  • Provide material and chemical optimization recommendations to support reduction/elimination of chemicals of concern
  • Support customer requests for Steelcase product information based on their list of chemicals of concern
  • Support Global Environmental Sustainability to ensure accuracy of environmental claims
  • Engage with customers and designers to communicate the value and progress of Steelcase's commitment to various environmental initiatives
  • Identify opportunities that will bring efficiency to and reduce costs of the materials chemistry initiatives

Qualifications: 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess an understanding of regulatory, legislative, legal and governance elements in relation to materials chemistry
  • Support networking efforts with subject matter thought leaders/materials suppliers
  • Work directly with supplier to support development of alternative materials
  • Excellent math, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work well in teams

Education and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in chemistry, materials science, toxicology or equivalent is required
  • Minimum of 2+ years in sustainability, eco-design, and/or social responsibility in a manufacturing, chemical or consumer products company
  • Experience and knowledge of sustainability best practices with focus on global manufacturing and chemical/material content and processes
  • Experience with product development and associated processes
  • Strong influencing skills, including buy-in and consensus building among all levels of the organization
  • Exceptional verbal, written and presentation skills coupled with strong project management skills
