Position Overview
The Business Development Manager - Midwest, will originate solar and solar+storage project sales in the Midwest Region and, as agreed, other regions of North America. Origination efforts will focus on electricity sales (PPAs), energy services sales (storage), and direct sale of solar and solar+storage systems (EPC contracts).
The Business Development Manager will have energy industry experience, knowledge of the solar and storage industries, and the ability to work successfully with origination team members in a fast-paced work environment. The Manager should be self-driven, able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, and comfortable interfacing and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including our in-house engineering team, storage system integrators, facility and land owners, utility officials, and other strategic partners.
Responsibilities extend across all phases of Company Business Development including customer relationship management, market-specific strategy and analysis, direct marketing, business development campaign plan creation and execution, and proposal development and management.
The Business Development Manager will have a proficiency in modeling large and complex data sets and an understanding of the ever-changing solar and energy storage policy and regulatory environment. The Business Development Manager also will be team-oriented and will demonstrate strong reasoning and communication skills, both oral and written.
Responsibilities
- Business Development Execution Directly originate solar and solar+storage project sales in Midwest and other designated region(s) in North America, including executing business development campaigns in targeted market segments, implementing contact plans with customers, developing and drafting project proposals, interfacing with multiple stakeholders to analyze available data and to structure and propose solar and solar+storage solutions.
- Market Research and Development Develop in-depth knowledge of, and become expert in, target regions and markets, including and regulatory incentives, verticals, and co-development opportunities; Identify and implement marketing initiatives and personal/professional outreach in the solar markets and storage markets, including developing origination materials, presenting to industry and customer constituencies, and identifying key marketing strategies and competitive differentiators.
- Customer Identification and Development Contribute to creation of, and implement, origination plans in Midwest and other, targeted region(s) and market(s), identify, filter, engage, and cultivate customer contacts in support of origination strategy and sales campaigns.
- Reporting and Pricing - Track, update, coordinate, and origination opportunities directly and with team using Salesforce; submit and manage project pricing requests and approval processes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree: business, marketing, environmental, or technical degree
- 5+ years of experience in renewable energy business development or comparable business development or sales experience
- Prior renewable energy industry experience, particularly solar or solar + storage, preferred
Skills:
- Interpersonal skills, diplomacy, win-win mindset, and effective strategic relationship builder with both internal/external project stakeholders
- Experience in opportunity identification; demonstrated success in prospecting, identifying, and qualifying new business opportunities.
- Experience in capture planning and in successfully building customer capture plans and strategies.
- Experience in building relationships; ability to develop customer relationships through existing contacts and relationships; build relationships quickly.
- Experience in managing sales and managing business development tasks and methods; and facilitating customer and internal decision making processes
- Proven track record of effective communications with project stakeholders, including energy customers, government officials, utility representatives, and community members
- Basic legal knowledge, including NDAs, PPAs, and EPC agreements
- Basic technical understanding of renewable technologies
- Time management skills with the ability to manage multiple and fast changing priorities
- Analytical skills understand the economic, technological and permitting issues of a project
- Proven ability to read and interpret site plans, land surveys, and title reports and to use or to quickly learn to use research, GIS and database tools
- High energy, and ability to work well in a team environment with proven attention to detail.
- Ability to travel upon request.

Physical Requirements:
- Walking project site visits with varying terrain and weather conditions.
Working Conditions
- Approximately 60% of the time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe, CAD, Salesforce etc.), telephones, and general office equipment.
- Approximately 40% of the time is spent interacting with customers and consultants onsite. Fulfills all delegated tasks many of which may be loosely associated with the primary assignment of the job description.
