Description

~ The University of Vermont is located in Burlington, the largest city in Vermont, with an increasingly ethnically and culturally diverse population. ~

The mission of the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources (RSENR) is to understand, nurture, and enrich the interdependence of people with healthy ecological systems. The School is based in the LEED platinum- certified Aiken Center, and has about 45 tenure-track research and teaching faculty, 35 staff, 600 undergraduates, and 100 graduate students in Master's and Ph.D. programs.

Position Overview

RSENR seeks applicants for a tenure-track professor at the assistant professor rank with a focus on ecological design of sustainable systems.

The position will support teaching and research focused on ecological design, innovation, and technology to integrate human and biophysical processes for sustainable social-ecological systems. Specific areas may include the recovery of systems degraded by pollution and the prevention of environmental degradation from human activities.

The position will contribute to the campus-wide environmental science program, in particular the ecological design concentration and students working in the new Ecological Design Collaboratory in the Greenhouse Residential Learning Community.

Local and regional opportunities for teaching and research include collaborative work related to wastewater and stormwater management, urban and suburban design, phosphorus management in the Lake Champlain Basin, the Aiken Center EcoMachine, and other green building initiatives. We seek candidates with a desire to work in a setting that features cross-disciplinary teaching and research with aquatic scientists, ecologists, modelers, and social scientists.

This is one of five positions that the Rubenstein School is searching for in Spring 2015, with an overall goal of enhancing research, teaching, and service that focuses on sustainability in the context of global and domestic environmental equity. Candidates with a demonstrated record of activity addressing cultural, ethnic, race, gender and/or socio-economic class as a part of shaping a sustainable society are encouraged to apply.
