The CSU Energy Institute was established in 2012 as the central, unifying hub of scholarly excellence in energy and serves as the nucleus of CSU’s energy-related research, education, and outreach. The Energy Institute supports numerous multidisciplinary energy related centers The physical space is located at the newly expanded 100,000 square-foot Powerhouse Energy Campus at CSU. Also housed at the Powerhouse is the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory (EECL).

Established in 1992, the EECL is among the nation’s largest academic engine research laboratories with strong ongoing research programs in advanced combustion engines, biofuels, natural gas systems, electric power systems, and energy for the developing world.

Position Summary 

Assistant/Associate Professor-Energy

This tenure track faculty member will have research and teaching expertise in energy applications and related mechanical engineering areas to synergistically strengthen current departmental research and teaching activities. Desired Start Date is 8/16/2020. 

This faculty position is a full-time, nine month appointment. Successful candidates will be expected to build and maintain a strong, internationally recognized research program supported through external funding, to enhance the Department’s educational programs, and to provide service to the University and broader community. 

This faculty member will teach courses in our mechanical engineering curriculum at the undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. levels, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and develop advanced courses in areas of expertise.

Specific areas of interest for this faculty member include: 

  • Energy Systems Engineering
  • Internal Combustion Engines
  • Combustion, Fuels, Chemical Kinetics and/or Catalysis
  • Impact of Energy Use on Environment, Climate, Air Quality, Public Health and Policy
  • Control of Energy Systems
  • Solar and/or Wind Energy
  • Energy Storage Systems
  • Transportation and Propulsion Systems
  • Smart buildings / infrastructure / connected communities and related

Responsibilities

Teaching and Advising  (40%)

  • Prepare and deliver ME courses to graduate and undergraduate students. 

Conduct and Publish Research in the Field of Mechanical Engineering  (50%)

  • Design, analyze and publish theoretical or applied studies in high quality scholarly journals in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Successfully compete for research funding. 

Service to Department, College, University and Discipline  (10%)

  • Serve on committees at departmental, college, and university levels.
  • Serve the discipline through activities such as committee membership on academic society committees and reviewing for journals and conferences. 

Qualifications 

Required

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in mechanical engineering or a closely related field is required.
  • The successful faculty member will have post-doctoral experience in an academic, government, or industrial setting.
  • The faculty member must have experience teaching courses in undergraduate and graduate curriculum and demonstrate a personal and professional commitment to diversity. 

Preferred 

This faculty member will provide evidence of:

  • an active research program; 
  • a record of high-quality research commensurate with experience; 
  • teaching effectiveness; and 
  • experience teaching courses in the field of Energy. 

Note: Candidates will be considered at the Assistant or Associate Professor level depending upon qualifications. 

Compensation: Proposed Annual Salary Range $85K-$110K.
