Position Overview

Stroud Water Research Center invites applications for a full-time Research Technician position as part of the aquatic entomology research team that includes six entomologists and 7-12 summer interns.

Recent research projects have focused on stream health as a function of land and water use, long-term recovery of macroinvertebrate and fish communities following stream and watershed restoration, and life history responses of mayflies exposed to extreme temperature and other environmental stressors.

Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibilities of the successful applicant will be to assist in the collection and processing of macroinvertebrate samples (identification of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera to genus and species);
  • Water samples for chemical analyses, and fisheries samples;
  • Maintenance of remote field sensors; and
  • Assistance with intern supervision in the laboratory.

Note: Opportunities to contribute to analysis and synthesis of data for interpretive reports will depend on applicant’s experience and project needs.

Qualifications

  • M.S. or B.S. (with 3-5 years of experience) in Biology, Zoology, Entomology, Fisheries, or similar field with a strong background in applied and basic aspects of stream ecology and aquatic entomology.
  • Education and research background should have provided sound training in aquatic insect taxonomy and natural history, statistical analysis, and data interpretation as well as opportunities for verbal and written communication.
  • Leadership and organizational skills should include the ability to work independently while interacting in a collaborative team environment.
  • Taxonomic skills should include the accurate identification of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera larvae to genus.
  • If experience is limited to identifying aquatic macroinvertebrate larvae to the family level, then there must be a strong background in invertebrate identification that demonstrates the ability to learn quickly.
  • Experience with genus-level identifications for chironomid midges, or species-level identifications for macroinvertebrates or fish should be highlighted.
