The Position
The Co-Executive Director (Co-ED) of Mobility Justice is a new position created to support Bike East Bay’s strategic priorities to build a more sustainable and equitable transportation system. The Co-ED of Mobility Justice is responsible for thought-leadership, local and regional advocacy, coalition building, and organizational development in support of Bike East Bay’s bicycle and transportation advocacy work rooted in mobility justice. The Co-ED of Mobility Justice will have the opportunity to shape the strategic direction of the organization and restructure or build out new programs to support that vision.
The Co-ED of Mobility Justice leads the Advocacy and Communications team, directly supervises 2-3 staff members, and works collaboratively with staff, board and community partners. The Co-ED of Mobility Justice reports horizontally to the Co-ED of People and Operations. Both Co-Executive Directors are overseen by the Board of Directors.
Location: Hybrid remote and in-person at our offices based in Oakland, CA.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Advocacy, Movement Building and Systems Change (50%)
- Oversee and work collaboratively with the Advocacy and Communications team to set goals, priorities and strategies for Bike East Bay’s advocacy agenda and campaigns.
- Develop relationships with and participate in regional and state level coalitions to advance shared agendas for equity, racial justice, environmental justice, and mobility justice.
- Advocate for, organize and resource the local bike ecosystem, partner organizations, and community members to participate in transportation planning processes and create systems change for community-based decision-making.
- Vision and build out Bike East Bay’s people of color-centered community organizing and leadership development program
- Develop staff capacity to implement systems change strategies, including policy change, community organizing, direct action, narrative change, and/or cultural organizing.
Development and Fundraising (25%)
- In partnership with the Development Director, recruit institutional funders and individual donors to support Bike East Bay’s work.
Responsibilities Shared Between Co-Executive Directors (25%)
Organizational Development and Management
- Uphold Bike East Bay’s positive, supportive and collaborative staff culture
- Promote the shared leadership model, support staff professional development through coaching, mentoring and training, and strive for inclusive and transparent decision making whenever possible and appropriate.
Fiscal and Executive Management
- Conduct strategic financial decision-making, with support from staff and the board Finance Committee.
- Develop and monitor the annual budget, provide timely internal reporting and forecasting, and ensure that adequate funds are available to carry out the organization’s work.
Board Development and Coordination
- Facilitate strong board and staff alignment around strategic planning, revisions to organizational structure, and programmatic and financial goals.
- Train and support the board’s capacity for effective governance.
Strategic Planning
- In 2023, lead a strategic planning process to center equity and mobility justice in Bike East Bay’s bicycle and transportation advocacy work and articulate our impact in intersecting issues areas, for example, policing and traffic enforcement; housing, gentrification and displacement; transit advocacy; climate change and sustainability; and disability mobility.

The ideal candidate is a coalition builder, strategist and team leader who is passionate about mobility justice and brings many of the following qualifications.
- At least 5 years professional and/or personal experience with advocacy campaigns, community organizing, capacity building, coalition building and movement strategy in Black and Brown communities, low-income communities and/or other marginalized communities.
- Professional and/or personal experience in bicycle advocacy, active transportation and/or urban planning.
- Professional and/or personal experience with social justice organizations that center equity and inclusion in their internal and external work.
- Experience with strategic planning, budgeting, and team management responsibilities
- Experience with narrative change, strategic communications and messaging.
- Experience in nonprofit fundraising, especially in foundation grants, individual donors and government contracts.

Compensation & Benefits:
The salary range for this full-time, exempt, salaried position is $110,000 to $130,000 depending on experience. Bike East Bay’s full-time benefits include a health and dental plan, 13 paid holidays, 3 days paid sick leave, and 15 days PTO annually, with PTO accruals increasing in subsequent years. Other benefits include a telecommuting stipend, flextime, and matching of an employee’s SIMPLE IRA contributions up to 3% of an employee’s annual salary.
