Position Overview
- York Land Trust, a non-profit land conservation organization based in York, Maine seeks a proven leader for the position of Stewardship Director.
- The Stewardship Director is responsible for a broad spectrum of management activities on York Land Trust’s conserved properties.
Responsibilities
- Conduct landowner outreach and annual monitoring, reporting and enforcement on conservation easement properties. Create baseline data for new conservation easements.
- Recruit, train and supervise volunteers and interns to help carry out land management activities.
- Seek and oversee work of professional contractors for certain land management activities including forest management, invasive species control, and construction of parking lots.
- Construct and maintain public access trails and implement measures to restore and enhance habitats.
- Conduct all planning, permitting, budgeting, and regulatory compliance for land management activities.
- Develop maps, guides, signs, kiosks and other public use materials for YLT’s nature preserves.
- Help determine conservation values on lands, and support land acquisition projects as needed.
- Prepare natural resource inventories and management plans for conserved properties.
- Maintain electronic, archived and field records for all YLT conserved properties.
- Seek grant funding for stewardship projects and handle grant reports and administration.
- Solicit, review and supervise occasional scientific research projects on YLT’s preserves.
- Ensure that land management tools, equipment and machinery are properly maintained.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s Degree and at least 6 years of experience in natural resources management, land stewardship and restoration or outdoor recreation/trails management is required.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, relationship building and public speaking ability.
- Desire and ability to meet the significant physical demands that the position requires.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully plan and manage multiple projects and priorities at the same time.
- Proven success leading and managing volunteers.
- Strong GIS mapping and database skills are essential.
- Grant writing and management experience is a plus.
- Chain saw and carpentry skills are a plus.
- Some weekend and evening work is required.
