Traveling Assistant Steward (full time, seasonal)

~ Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) was founded in 1970 to protect the very best of the Maine coast, and we’ve come a long way in the last 50 years, conserving more than 150,000 acres (that's about three times the size of Acadia National Park) and creating more than 100 public preserves open to all. ~

Today, we work out of four different offices and in all seven coastal counties to protect land, care for the land, connect you to the coast, and support other Maine land trusts.

We believe in the singular beauty of the Maine coast and protecting everyone's access to it. 

But right now, this extraordinary coast is facing urgent threats. Access to the shore is being cut off, climate change is negatively impacting native plants and animals, and development pressure continues to compromise the lands we depend upon.

MCHT is now in the midst of an historic campaign to create more access to the shore, protect wildlife habitat, and work with Maine communities to save the places people love.

Position Overview

MCHT is looking for a Traveling Assistant Steward who will pair up with another Traveling Assistant Steward working on many of the Trust’s mainland and island preserves under the supervision of our Regional Stewardship staff starting as soon as possible through-mid October.

This position will be based from Mount Desert Island where MCHT will provide accommodations. When working at other sites, accommodations will vary. There will be cabins at some sites, other sites will require camping. Days will be long, and days off will be clustered. Some basic gear will be provided.

Responsibilities

• Work will include preserve maintenance such as trail clearing, trail improvement, boundary marking, painting structures, basic carpentry, vegetation control and basic maintenance of tools and vehicles.
• Although not directly responsible for public education, the Assistant Stewards will be representing MCHT and will be expected to interact positively with the public when there is an opportunity.
• The Assistant Stewards will move frequently, although will occasionally work at the same site for more than one week.
