~ New York Sea Grant (NYSG), a cooperative program of the State University of New York (SUNY) and Cornell University, is part of a national network of 33 university-based state sea grant programs that are administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). ~

NYSG integrates research, education and extension to promote economic vitality and environmental sustainability to coastal residents and communities of the State's marine and Great Lakes areas. 

Position Overview

New York Sea Grant is currently seeking an Estuarine Resilience Planning and Policy Specialist.

Responsibilities

  • This Specialist will plan, develop, implement and evaluate a regional extension education program pertaining to estuarine resilience with a focus on watershed and land use planning and policy in the face of climate change and extreme weather. Issues to be addressed may include climate change, extreme weather and sea level rise impacts on the wetlands, shorelines, communities, public lands as well as adaptive river and shoreline planning.
  • Groups served may include coastal communities, coastal businesses, public and/or private landowners as well as teachers.
  • Work closely with university faculty, government agencies and non-governmental organizations to develop programming relevant to New York's Hudson River Valley that may be replicated in other regional coastal estuarine and riverine systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in coastal/natural resource management, land use planning, marine/environmental policy or closely related field.
  • 2+ years of progressively responsible experience in Sea Grant Extension, Cooperative Extension, adult education or the equivalent is required.
  • Experience in successfully conducting applied research and extending this to potential users through organized education.
  • Substantial knowledge of principles, theory, and research in subject matter field and knowledge of adult education related to area of specialization.
  • Advanced computer skills and the ability to use computer and long distance education technologies in their area of programming expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop extension programs and teach adults.
  • Experience with initiating, conducting and evaluating extension programs.
  • Ability to define and interpret original research projects.
  • Ability to lead and effectively participate in professional team efforts.
  • Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders and targeted audiences.
  • Experience in communicating effectively through multiple media.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of relevant codes and ordinances.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other mapping programs to visualize data and experience working with complex issues with diverse stakeholders.
