Conservation Alliance funds have played a key role in protecting wildlands, rivers, trails, and climbing areas. Membership in The Conservation Alliance is open to companies representing all aspects of the outdoor industry, including manufacturers, retailers, publishers, mills and sales representatives. The result is a diverse group of businesses whose livelihood depends on protecting our natural environment. Since its inception in 1989, The Conservation Alliance has contributed more than $20 million to grassroots environmental groups. We are a small organization with an active board comprised of outdoor industry leaders.
Position Overview
The Conservation Alliance is seeking candidates for the position of Membership and Development Program Manager. This Program Manager oversees a comprehensive program to grow The Conservation Alliance membership in the outdoor and sister industries.
This is a permanent full time, salaried role that reports to the Executive Director and is located in Bend, Oregon (non-negotiable).
Primary responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement member recruitment and retention strategies;
- Organize and implement promotions, events, and cause marketing partnerships that raise funds for the organization;
- Manage membership services;
- Develop and implement communications strategies that support membership recruitment and retention;
- Manage Outreach Associate contractor to implement Backyard Collective stewardship program, and other events that benefit members.
Specific Duties
The Program Manager works closely with the Executive Director and all program staff in the following areas:
Recruitment & Retention
- With Recruitment Committee Chair, lead board Recruitment & Retention (R&R) Task Force to implement comprehensive recruitment strategy
- Identify and communicate membership value to members in outdoor and sister industries
- Maintain effective recruitment collateral, and ensure that they are integrated into recruitment efforts
- Work with BOD to develop and implement a plan to expand membership in new business sectors
- Meet in person with and make presentations to existing and potential members to deepen relationships
- Support BOD in overall recruitment and retention efforts
- Administrative tasks as needed to ensure smooth operation of the program
Fundraising Promotions (Online, Trade Shows, Cause Marketing)
- Organize fundraising events at industry trade shows, and through online promotions
- Support members in executing customized cause marketing initiatives that raise funds for and awareness of The Conservation Alliance
- Work with the Executive Director to maintain and grow the Leading Edge major donor program
Membership Management
- Maintain member database
- Process New Membership Applications and onboarding process
- Handle invoicing for and collection of member company dues
- Handle all dues acknowledgement letters and thank you notes
- Manage PayPal account for membership dues and individual contributions
Communications
- Manage all communications specific to membership recruitment and retention through all communication channels (website, blog, social media, eNews)
Backyard Collective Program and Event Management
- Manage Outreach Associate contractor to ensure strong organization and implementation of BYC events, trade show events, and board meetings
- Work with Outreach Associate to ensure timely communication with Communication Manager for event announcements and recaps
- Manage Backyard Collective Budget, collecting participation fees and tracking expenses
- Attend BYC events as needed
Qualifications
- Outdoor Industry experience and contacts preferred
- Experience managing a membership and knowledge of membership software preferred
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills including comfort with public speaking
- Ability to communicate effectively with senior level business executives
- Ability to organize and effectively handle multiple projects, meet regular deadlines with consistency and accuracy, work independently within a small team structure, and work under pressure with ease and humor
- Desire to work in a small, mission-driven team
- Experience managing social media preferred
