The Wildlife Biologist is responsible for managing the recreational lease program on approximately 800,000 acres in Atlantic Division. In addition, provide guidance on wildlife, plant communities and other environmental attributes to forest operations regarding environmental regulatory compliance, forest policy coordination, and implementation of stewardship programs.

Responsibilities

Scope:

  • The Atlantic Division area encompasses approximately 800,000 acres. Specifically, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.
  • Utilize Quality Deer Management (QDM) to improve deer herd health, quality of recreation and overall outdoor experiences for our recreation customers.
  • Develop and maintain internal relationships.
  • Develop and maintain external relationships with peers, agencies, research organizations, and forest landowner associations.
  • Develop and implement management strategies for wildlife, plant communities, and other environmental attributes to ensure operations are within stewardship policies and procedures and within state, federal, and provincial laws and regulations.

Job Dimensions:

  • Manage wildlife, fish, plant community, and landscape level environmental information.
  • Facilitate the collection and synthesis of survey and monitoring data.
  • Ensure compliance with stewardship and environmental regulations.
  • Provide wildlife, plant community, and environmental technical support.
  • Participate in policy development within state trade associations
  • Reports to General Manager, Value Added Services.

Specific Duties:

  • Publish safety topics for recreational customers to ensure their safety while on Hancock managed lands.
  • Age harvested animals to ensure recreational users are harvesting older deer.
  • Develop harvest reports for Tier 1 recreational lessors.
  • Provide technical support for interactions with federal, provincial, and state forest management and wildlife agency staff.
  • Contribute to the implementation of forest certification programs by supporting and implementing stewardship policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate and coordinate research projects.
  • Participate in the Atlantic Division safety program.
  • Participate in the Atlantic Division Stewardship program.
  • Implement stewardship procedures and policies.
  • Integrate research and monitoring results into forest management activities.
  • Coordinate wildlife, plant, and environmental survey efforts.
  • Coordinate external wildlife, plant, and environmental research on managed properties.
  • Property acquisition and disposition support.
  • Training for field staff.
  • Manage contracts and contractors.
  • Special projects as requested.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Accredited MS in Wildlife/Fisheries, Biology, or related field or accredited BS in Wildlife/Fisheries, Biology, or related field with 3+ years of experience.
  • Preferred experience in wildlife, fisheries, and forest management.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Team player with collaborative skills.
  • Highly motivated and entrepreneurial.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate difficult terrain in forest environments.
  • Ability to apply sound judgment in decision making with strong orientation to detailed and high-quality work.
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite, including Access and ability to use or become proficient in GIS and GPS mapping tools, and other specialized software applications.
