Position Overview

Trees Atlanta’s Education branch, the TreeHouse, is looking for a Youth Education Coordinator who will take a lead role in managing the year-round Junior TreeKeeper (JTK) Camp as well as other targeted youth education programming. The Junior TreeKeeper Camp has offerings in the summer and during Atlanta Public School breaks (teacher planning days and quarterly breaks – Fall, Winter, and Spring).

Responsibilities

The Youth Education Coordinator will:

  • Develop environmental education programs for K-12 youth.
  • Lead camp programs by managing all logistics for Junior TreeKeeper Camp, including recruiting, training, and managing seasonal camp employees and interns.
  • Assist with in-school Urban TreeTrackers program and other similar school series.
  • Coordinate service-learning projects (such as tree plantings or invasive removal projects).
  • Plan and facilitate standardized and customized programs for target youth groups, such as Boy Scout and Girl Scout Badge Programs.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and organize volunteers to support programs as needed to increase visibility and program registrations.
  • Compile and report data on program metrics to track performance.
  • Manage program calendar.
  • Safely lead students on bike tours on the Atlanta BeltLine.
  • Occasionally drive company vehicles for projects.
  • Perform administrative tasks as required.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Have a valid driver’s license with a 3-year history of safe driving.
  • Be able to pass pre-employment background and drug screenings.
  • Degree in environmental education, ecology, urban forestry or related field of study; or strong background in science, STEM/STEAM teaching, primary or secondary education or outdoor leadership.
  • Experience leading indoor and outdoor education initiatives for grades K-12.
  • Preferred: experience teaching tree and plant identification, urban ecosystem dynamics, and environmentally focused arts and crafts.
  • Preferred: experience coordinating or leading youth summer camps (day camps).
  • Preferred certifications: First Aid, CPR, Project Learning Tree, and other relevant certifications.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office software and the Google suite of office tools.
  • Have exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills for interactions with youth and adults, community representatives, volunteers, and staff.
  • Be detail oriented with strong time and task management skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Physically capable of active days outdoors in various weather conditions, including exposure to sun, heat, cold, inclement weather, dirt, and insects.
  • Be able to lift up to 25 lbs.

Additional Information

  • You will report to work at 112 Krog Street, #7, Atlanta, GA 30307 and travel to various schools in and around the City of Atlanta, on the Atlanta BeltLine and the BeltLine Arboretum, and various locations in Atlanta, as required.
  • Able to work occasional Saturdays or evening events.
  • Standard work hours are M-F (8:30 am – 4:30 am), but early morning and early evening hours may be necessary to match program schedules.
  • Flex-time is used to offer an equivalent of 40/hr work week.
