The Environmental Science Program (ENVL) provides a broad understanding of how physical, biological and human components of the environment interact to prepare students to become environmental professionals.
We stress a multidisciplinary approach that enables students to follow their interests and select elective courses in our or in other programs at Stockton. Each senior student completes a research project or works as an intern with an environmental organization to gain more practical experience and to integrate his or her academic work with a real world experience. Our courses emphasize fieldwork and other practical experiences. We encourage close work with our full-time faculty and we provide the latest technology to train students to step into an environmentally related career and help them achieve the goal of becoming professionals and lifelong learners.
Position Overview
The Stockton University Environmental Science program is seeking to fill a tenure track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a Forest Ecologist to teach forestry and related courses, as well as continue the implementation of Stockton’s unique Forest Management Plan, for September 2019. Preference will be given to those who have a demonstrated past experience actively managing forests on the private, state or federal levels, using the precepts of ecological forest management. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the Environmental Science program, as well as in the interdisciplinary General Studies curriculum. Additionally, a commitment to university service and continuing research activity is required.
Responsibilities
- Lead students in the Forestry Concentration within the Environmental Science program by teaching courses in Ecological Forest Management, Dendrology, and additional upper level courses related to expertise.
- Contribute to the core Environmental Science curriculum by teaching a program core course, (e.g., Statistical Analysis of Ecological Systems or Ecological Principles).
- Develop a laboratory-based research program involving undergraduate students.
- Contribute to the interdisciplinary general studies curriculum.
- Excellent teaching and scholarship are expected. Teaching load is 12 hours each semester and typically consists of lecture and lab sections.
- Continue and enhance current campus forest research and student involvement with the Stockton Forest Management Plan. Currently this research includes experiments using prescribed burns and various silvicultural treatments.
- Serve as an advisor to undergraduate students.
- Participate in service to the university, community, and discipline.
- Demonstrate, through past accomplishments and actions, the ability to support Stockton University’s diversity commitment and strong student-centered vision and mission.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Forest Management, Silviculture, Forest Ecology or related field is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to incorporate a commonly used statistics package in teaching of undergraduates (R, SAS, etc.)
- Experience managing forests using the principles of ecological forest management.
- GIS experience.
- Ability to complement upper level forestry classes with additional upper level courses, potentially Spatial Statistics or Remote Sensing.
