~ The agency as organized on July 1, 1994, under the S.C. Restructuring Act is composed of the former Wildlife and Marine Resources Department, Water Resources Commission (non-regulatory programs), Land Resources Commission (non-regulatory programs), State Geological Survey (State Geologist), and S.C. Migratory Waterfowl Committee. ~

These have been combined into the present division structure. The Department has developed a vision for the future to guide the agency in its mission and provide the public with a clear understanding of its plan to preserve South Carolina's natural wealth. Alvin A. Taylor is the current director of the agency.

Position Overview

  • South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is currently has a vacancy for the position Natural Resources Technician II. 
  • Position closes 9/25/2018 5:00 PM Eastern.

Responsibilities

  • Natural Resources Technician II assists the Cultural Heritage Preserves Manager with the installation and management of new and existing features of the Cultural Heritage Preserves located primarily in Regions I, II & III, however work will be in other Regions of the state as well.
  • This includes implementation of cultural resource, habitat, and wildlife management activities.
  • Establishes a regular visitation routine to the Greenville, Spartanburg, Chester, Aiken, Richland, and Lexington County Cultural Heritage Preserves that will allow for inspection and management work to be conducted on these properties and creates a visible SCDNR presence.
  • Manages tasks including vegetation control such as eradication of invasive plant species and regular mowing of open grass land.
  • Maintenance of trails, kiosks, gates, property lines and signage.
  • Participates in trash pickup. Inspects Cultural Heritage Preserves for looting of archeological resources, encroachments and violations of SCDNR regulations.
  • Assists the SCDNR & Heritage Trust Archeologist with cultural resource protection work.

Qualifications

Minimum and Additional Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in wildlife or fisheries work or an associate degree in the technical sciences. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work and maintain good working relations with the public, technical field staff, office staff, managers and administrative staff.
  • Ability to work within a group or individual setting, completing all delegated tasks as required by supervisors within a specified time frame.
  • Ability to talk with the public and answer questions in various settings (i.e. field, laboratory, and meetings).
  • Possess writing and communication skills in order to effectively communicate with staff, supervisors and the public.
  • Ability to operate 4x4 vehicles and conduct field work that may include the operation of various equipment (i.e. chainsaws, weed eaters, lawn mowers, tractors, wood chippers, power tools, motor boats, canoes/kayaks) in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects. Willingness to obtain Herbicide Applicators License, Prescribed Fire Manager Certification, CPR/AED Certification, and Wilderness First Aid Training.

Compensation

  • $22,182.00 - $41,046.00 Annually
