Position Overview

The Pembina Institute is seeking a highly motivated individual to join its transportation and urban solutions team as an analyst or senior analyst who will research and advocate for solutions to accelerate Canada’s transition to a clean energy economy at the local, regional and national levels. The scope of work will include on-road freight, personal vehicles, and public transit as well as the interaction of transportation systems with the built environment.
We’re looking for a person who is engaged in the transportation and urban solutions space and wants to influence the narrative around these issues in Canada.

The ideal candidate is excited about crunching the numbers behind policy and business decisions, knows where to find the right data and how to build basic models. We’re looking for a problem-solver who knows what questions to ask to get at the root of today’s challenges, and who actively follows transportation and urban solutions trends, blogs and thought leaders.

This role will require engagement with and communication to diverse stakeholders, including municipal, provincial and federal governments, industry, communities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to support the development and implementation of good transportation and climate policies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research projects from inception to delivery in close collaboration with the Institute’s transportation and urban solutions team
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of transportation, urban and climate policy and programs (e.g. transportation technologies and their GHG impacts, urban development dynamics)
  • Review analysis of peers and collaborate with various teams internally
  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with other NGOs, the private sector, academia, and municipal and provincial governments
  • Represent the Pembina Institute at meetings and forums
  • This position is located in our Toronto office and reports to the managing director of transportation and urban solutions. It is full time (40 hours a week) and may require some travel and occasional work on weekends and evenings

Qualifications

Candidates must clearly reflect the following skills and experience in their application:

  • A degree in engineering, economics, business, planning, sciences, law, public policy or
    related field — graduate degree preferred
  • 2 - 5 years of professional experience or equivalent experience
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of economic, environmental, business, social and/or political aspects of transportation and urban development, including one or more of the following areas: transit, on-road freight, electric vehicles and transit oriented development
  • Experience quantifying environmental benefits of policy decisions and options
  • Familiarity with interpreting and/or developing simple quantitative models
  • Familiarity with key provincial policies (e.g. Ontario’s Climate Change Action Plan, Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan and the provincial Growth Plan)
  • Ability to communicate complex technical matters in plain language
  • Proficient with Microsoft and Google documents, spreadsheets and presentations
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and social change through educational, professional, and/or volunteer experiences
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide array of stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to take initiative and work independently

Other Valuable Qualifications:

  • Experience in policy advocacy and/or campaigning
  • Direct experience developing and/or implementing government policy
  • Direct experience helping businesses make energy- or transportation-related decisions
  • Experience in public speaking
  • Experience in strategy development
  • Experience in facilitation
  • Active social media user
  • Experience working with First Nations, local governments, industry and/or communities

Compensation: The salary rate is competitive for an analyst or senior analyst in the environmental in the nonprofit sector and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
