Position Overview

The Environmental Studies Program (EVST) at Seattle University invites applications for a part-time Adjunct, Environmental Studies position to teach a Geology course in fall 2018. The course is a sophomore-level class that takes an Earth Systems approach to explore the interconnectedness of the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, and how these systems impact humanity and vice versa.

Two essential concepts are the scientific method as applied to Earth systems and how scientists view geologic time, which is critical to sustainability and to understanding why Earth so often surprises us. Using these foundations, along with an introduction to the basics of Earth materials, topics may include earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, groundwater, energy resources, climate change, hydrology, coastal processes, sea-level change and more.

The class is required of all EVST majors and meets twice per week during daytime hours, with one lecture period and one longer lecture/lab period that is designed to accommodate class field trips. The instructional approach will include lectures, field trips, data-driven labs and inquiry-based small-group work.
