Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP; TSX:BLD) today introduced as 75 kW Ecostar(TM) power converter specifically designed for photovoltaic applications. The company says it is the only 75 kW grid-tie utility interactive power inverter available to PV customers and claims the Ecostar(TM) power converter combines superior inverter and transformer efficiency with ease of installation and use. With peak transformer efficiency of 98.4 percent, system operating losses reduced to 25 Watts and continuous power output at full load, the Ecostar(TM) power converter is one of the most efficient commercial inverters available in North America. Ballard offers a five-year extended warranty for parts and labor and is listed by the California Energy Commission. Key benefits of the Ecostar(TM) power converter include: Night-time isolation: the inverter automatically disconnects from the grid and isolates the power transformer when there is no power from the PV array; further, it automatically "wakes up" when the sun reappears, thus eliminating nighttime transformer losses; Patented software algorithms: offers reliable grid-parallel operation, anti-islanding and over/under frequency and voltage protections; Highly efficient maximum power-point tracking: operates independently of PV cell technologies and fill-factors for maximum installation flexibility and reduced operating costs; Liquid cooling: increases system reliability and inverter life cycle. The Ecostar(TM) […]

DynaMotive (OTCBB:DYMTF) announced it has broken ground on the construction site of the world's largest pyrolysis plant and the first pyrolysis oil fueled power co-generation facility. The plant will be completed over the summer. The plant is a showcase for DynaMotive's pyrolysis and Magellan Aerospace, Orenda Industrial generation technologies. It will demonstrate the commercial potential in improving the efficiency of energy recovery from conversion of biomass waste to generate electric power using less fuel than traditional methods that use solid biomass combustion. DynaMotive will build, install and operate a unique system to process wood residues produced by Erie Flooring and Wood Products and transform it to BioOil (a medium heating value liquid fuel) and char. The plant is expected to process 100 tons per day of biomass and to produce 70 tons of BioOil, 20 tons of char and 10 tons of non-condensable gases. 50 tons of BioOil per day will be used to fuel a gas turbine developed by Orenda to produce up to 2.5 MWE of electricity — enough to serve 2,500 households — to meet the power requirements of the Erie Flooring plant and also enough to export electricity to Ontario's energy grid. Surplus heat generated by […]

GE Energy is supplying 30 wind turbines for two projects in France that will total 45 megawatts of new wind power capacity, representing an increase of almost 20% in the country's installed wind capacity. In 2003, France increased its capacity for wind-generated electricity by 91 megawatts, bringing the total installed capacity to 239 megawatts. The French government is supporting wind power development with fixed tariffs for wind-powered electricity, and has set a goal of 5,000 megawatts of capacity by the year 2010. GE is supplying its 1.5-megawatt wind turbines for both projects. The first project, La Haute Lys, is one of the first large French installations of wind turbines, and will be located in four municipal areas in northern France: Fauquembergues, Renty-Audincthun, Reclinghem and Vincly. The project owner is Sechilienne-Sidec, a holding company that is part of the Air Liquide Group of France. Project developers are Cegelec, France's largest electrical engineering contractor; and Espace Eolien Developpement, a leading French wind project developer. Project completion is expected by the fourth quarter of 2004. The second project, Sortosville-Les Beaumont, is located in the Cotentin area on the west coast of France. The project owner is CEPE du Cotentin, and the developer is […]

Novation, a leading health care supplier received an award for its work to "change the culture of the health care industry" toward greater environmental sensitivity. The company won the 2004 Champion for Change award for helping health care facilities reduce hazardous waste, use more environmentally responsible products and virtually eliminate mercury from the waste stream. "Novation is developing innovative ways to virtually eliminate pollutants from health care products and practices," said Laura Brannen, director of the Hospitals for a Healthy Environment program, which announced the award. Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) is a joint program of the American Hospital Association, the federal Environmental Protection Agency, Health Care Without Harm, and the American Nurses Association. The organization seeks to improve the environmental performance of the health care industry. Through its contracts, used by the more than 2,300 VHA and UHC member hospitals and health care organizations nationwide, Novation delivers comprehensive measures to help reduce harmful waste. Among the factors used by Novation in contract evaluations is whether suppliers are using environmentally preferred packaging programs or offer hazardous materials management initiatives. In its safety product catalogs, Novation lists "green" products, as well as products that are free of mercury, latex, PVC […]
