DTE Energy (NYSE: DTE) today broke ground on its Hydrogen Technology Park, a pilot project that will model a complete, multi-use hydrogen energy system. DTE Energy was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as its partner to develop, build and operate the project that will create hydrogen gas from tap water and use that gas in fuel cell generators and to refuel fuel cell vehicles. DOE will provide 49 percent of the funding for the $3 million, three-year project, which will result in a system capable of delivering about 100,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year — enough to power a small office building or about 20 homes — and enough compressed hydrogen gas to fuel three vehicles per day. The project will be at Detroit Edison's Southfield Station on the northeast corner of 11 Mile and Inkster roads. The Technology Park is in one of Michigan's SmartZones, established by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. to foster collaboration between technology-based businesses and research institutions. DTE Energy is working with Lawrence Technological University to provide student learning and research opportunities using the Technology Park as a working laboratory. DTE Energy also announced recently that the Hydrogen Technology Park will participate […]

The House of Representatives' much-anticipated return to energy on the floor is set to begin and likely end tomorrow, featuring debate and votes on a handful of energy-related bills. The former "energy week" debate, rescheduled and condensed into one day to accommodate a legislative backlog, will focus on legislation that effectively mimics last fall's energy conference report and three separate bills. These include an attempt to streamline the licensing process for renewable energy projects, legislation that expedites the permitting process for refineries and a measure that opens up ANWR to oil and gas exploration, using the revenue to help clean up abandoned coal mines and help coal miners. The House Rules Committee will meet today to determine the rules for the energy-related bills. Many industry observers expect the rules of debate to be restrictive because the goal of the entire process is to highlight energy and job creation policy differences between House Republicans and congressional Democrats. Republicans particularly blame Senate Democrats for stalling the energy bill. But Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, the GOP's key target in this debate, said last week that as Republicans control both houses of Congress, they should be able to get a bill through without […]
