FedEx to Build 2nd-Largest US Private Solar System

FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX) and the City of Oakland, California today announced that FedEx Express will construct California's largest corporate solar electric system atop its hub at Oakland International Airport. The 904-kilowatt solar array will be second in size only to Fala Direct Marketing's solar system in Long Island, New York, which is 1.02 megawatts. It will be built at its hub at Oakland's international airport, and is scheduled to begin operations in May, 2005. It will provide approximately 80 percent of the peak load demand for the company's Oakland facility, which employs 1,700 people. "With this project, FedEx will deliver more environmental innovation to California," said Mitch Jackson, managing director, corporate and international environmental programs, FedEx Express. "From hybrid electric delivery trucks to solar power, we are proud to lead our industry in committing to real, practical ways to reduce pollution, conserve fossil fuels, and contribute to a greener world." "FedEx is proving that solar power works for business," said Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown. "Thanks to the vision shown by FedEx, we're adding nearly one megawatt of zero-pollution electric generating capacity to Oakland. With this project, we're well on our way to my administration's goal of adding five megawatts of […]

Memphis Blight Turns into Premier Green Community

One of Memphis' most blighted neighborhoods will soon become one of the premier green communities in America. Former vacant and neglected lots in the Uptown district are being transformed into models of energy efficiency that will significantly reduce homeowners' monthly utility costs. At the core of Uptown's revitalization area is new home construction using EcoBuild, a green building program created by Memphis Light, Gas & Water that is designed to be 30% more energy efficient than typical residential construction in Shelby County. Homes built to EcoBuild standards feature a more efficient air-conditioning system, better windows and roofing materials to minimize heat gain, and recycled products to keep construction matter out of landfills. Targeting low- to moderate-income families, the Uptown redevelopment project will ultimately rejuvenate 100 blocks of the north Memphis Downtown area. With 11 new single-family homes completed and about 400 on tap, MLGW regards Uptown as its petri dish, says Becky Williamson, MLGW strategic marketing coordinator. "Uptown is a great laboratory for this experiment of building energy-efficient homes," she says. "The infrastructure was already there so it is just reclaiming an area that was abandoned and neglected. It's a great opportunity, and we are really looking forward to it […]

New Jersey Bans Non-Native Plants on State Land

TRENTON, New Jersey, October 19, 2004 (ENS) – New Jersey is prohibiting the planting of non-native species on state lands, and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued an advisory list of 20 tree species, 40 shrub species, 15 vine species, 66 herb species, and 16 grass and sedge species that are no longer welcome on public lands in New Jersey. The list contains just a fraction of the more than 1,200 nonindigenous plants in New Jersey that have been introduced, accidentally or intentionally, mostly from Europe and Asia. Because these tend to have few natural predators or parasites on this continent, they are aggressive competitors for space and nutrients in New Jersey's natural areas. The new policy is intended to reduce the spread of these invasive species that choke out New Jersey's natural plants and threaten wetlands and waterways, said DEP Commissioner Bradley Campbell, announcing the directive on Thursday. "State agencies need to lead by example and stop planting invasive species on lands that we manage," said Campbell. "This is a small, but important step in our long-term struggle to address this significant threat to New Jersey's rich natural heritage." Invasive species also threaten New Jersey's agricultural resources […]

Micro fuel cells have the potential to be used in a wide range of applications including battery replacements, transportation, light-duty vehicles, emergency power, consumer tools, marine applications, communications, and mobile power. Mobion(TM) is being designed to power portable devices up to ten times longer than traditional battery packs. Added benefits include instant cord-free recharging wherein the fuel compartment can be refilled with the quick replacement of a cartridge. In addition, a patent pending design that creates a simplified fuel cell process that can be operated in any orientation is a key plus. Mobion(TM) is a high-powered, lightweight power source. By making use of fuel cells instead of traditional batteries that contain heavy metal, it provides environmental benefits. MTI Micro expects […]
