BEIJING, China, November 3, 2004 (ENS) – China and the European Commission of European Union together announced ?42.9 million energy and environment program in Beijing today to improve energy efficiency in China and combat climate change. The European Commission and China will each pay about half the costs of the program. The announcement comes as the result of a weeklong visit by EU Commission Director-General of the Directorate for Environment Catherine Day to Beijing that ended Monday. The five year EU-China Energy and Environment Program was jointly launched by the Chinese State Development and Reform Commission and the Delegation of the European Commission of European Union, according to the Chinese official news agency Xinhua. The cooperative program covers energy saving projects and the development of renewable energy and natural gas. These projects are part of the EU's effort to work with China to limit global warming. GLAND, Switzerland, November 3, 2004 (ENS) – The Islamic Republic of Iran has joined IUCN-The World Conservation Union and becomes the 80th country to become a member of the prestigious international conservation organization. "Iran's membership to IUCN cements a long standing relationship in dealing with the environment and development challenges facing the country, the Asian continent and the world at large," said Dr. Odeh Al Jayyousi, the IUCN Director for the WESCANA region, which encompasses West/Central Asia and North Africa. The IUCN and Iran have collaborated on, among other things, the development of a national program addressing major conservation issues of importance to Iran. By joining the IUCN, Iran strengthens the Union's resolve to work closely with governments, civil society and the private sector in the governance of the world's natural resources. Back as far as October 2001, the IUCN was providing technical assistance to Iran in drafting a national biodiversity strategy and action plan, and in the conservation of the vulnerable Asiatic cheetah and its natural habitat. FuelCell Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq: FCEL) and its distribution partner in Japan, Marubeni Corp. (TSE: 8002), announced they have signed an agreement with POSCO (NYSE: PKX) to enter into a strategic alliance to distribute and package Direct FuelCell (DFC) power plants in Korea. The three companies have further agreed to jointly investigate formation of a joint venture for the research, development and production of DFC products in Korea for sale throughout Asian and eventually global markets. As part of this agreement, POSCO will purchase three 250-kilowatt DFC300A power plants from FuelCell Energy through Marubeni, with the first unit to be sited at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) in Pohang City, Korea. Siting announcements for the two additional DFC power plants are expected by the end of calendar year 2004. POSCO will cooperate with FuelCell Energy and Marubeni to design and manufacture balance of plant components to meet the requirements of the Asian market.
