The California Energy Commission approved new regulations that will make appliances sold in the state the most energy efficient in the nation. "The result of today's 5-0 vote will be to slow electricity demand in the state and save approximately 100 megawatts of generating capacity every year," said Energy Commissioner Jackalyne Pfannenstiel, presiding member of the Commission's Efficiency Committee. "The energy savings are cumulative, so that in 10 years, because of today's new appliance regulations, we can avoid building three large power plants that would have to generate as much as 1,000 megawatts." The standards regulate appliances such as incandescent lamps; audio and video equipment; residential pool pumps and portable electric spas; evaporative coolers; ceiling fans, exhaust fans and whole house fans; commercial ice makers, refrigerators and freezers; vending machines; commercial hot food holding cabinets and water dispensers, among others. The regulations go into effect on a staggered schedule beginning in January 2006. The new regulations also cover external power supplies, the small transformers that are used to power answering machines, cell and cordless phones, and a host of other small consumer products and small appliances. EarthShell Corporation (OTCBB:ERTH), innovators of biodegradable food service packaging, and EarthShell Hidalgo S.A. de C.V. of Mexico (EarthShell Hidalgo), have signed a licensing agreement under which EarthShell Hidalgo will manufacture, distribute and sell EarthShell Packaging throughout Mexico. EarthShell Corporation approved the formation of EarthShell Hidalgo by a group of business leaders in Mexico, led by Licenciado (Lic.) David Maczka, with expertise in manufacturing and introducing products into the Mexican and global textile market. The terms of the agreement grant EarthShell Hidalgo a performance-based, exclusive contract for the Mexican marketplace. The agreement defines yearly capital commitments with specific capacity and revenue goals for each of the first five years. Early next year, EarthShell Hidalgo will issue a purchase order for an initial 8 manufacturing modules with production capacity of approximately 200 million units per year of EarthShell Packaging foam laminate products. EarthShell Hidalgo's goal is to have 96 modules operating within 3 years. Automotive technology pioneer ZAP (OTC BB: ZAPZ) that has signed a purchase order with Anuvu Incorporated (Sacramento, CA)for its patented Power-X(TM) hydrogen fuel cell engine systems. "I believe that this is the largest order ever for PEM fuel cell engines," said Anuvu National Sales Director Craig Newhouse, PhD. "We look forward to working with ZAP to make reasonably priced zero emission fuel cell powered vehicles available for both consumers and fleet buyers." According to officials from ZAP and Anuvu, the two Northern California companies intend to deliver the first fuel cell powered vehicles to consumers in 2005. ZAP CEO Steve Schneider says it is another opportunity for ZAP to take the lead in introducing automotive innovations into the marketplace. Said ZAP CEO Steve Schneider, "ZAP had the first practical electric bicycle, first practical electric scooter, first practical electric car, and recently the first federally approved SMART Car in the United States.
