According to an article in Asia Pulse, the Nanjing PV-Tech Co., Ltd. has begun construction of China’s largest and most advanced solar cell production base in Nanjing Jiangning Development Zone. The first phase of the project is estimated to cost US$30 million and is scheduled to start production in June. When the three phases of the project are completed by the end of 2005, the plant will have a capacity of 100 MW of solar cells. China’s State Development and Reform Commission is investing 10 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) to promote solar energy in China. The Chinese Electrical Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CEEG) plans to generate solar cells totaling 600 MW by 2008, with 15 billion yuan of sales value.

The Colorado Green Wind Power Project, the fifth largest wind farm in the nation and the largest in the state, may triple in size. The wind farm, which is jointly owned by PPM Energy and Shell WindEnergy Inc., spans 11,840 acres of grassland between Lamar and Springfield. With 108 wind turbines on line, the Colorado Green Wind Project at full power can generate enough power to serve the energy needs of about 52,000 homes and businesses. PPM energy is venturing out on its own, proposing an expansion that will include about 100 turbines in Prowers County and another 100 turbines in Bent County. The company will own 100 percent of the new project. Raimund Grube, director of business development for PPM, said Tuesday that the new expansion will run east and west of the existing Colorado Green Project. The company obtained a special land use permit for 100 turbines from Prowers County officials Tuesday and will seek another permit from Bent County next week. “We are looking for approximately the same amount of turbines in Bent County,” Grube said. Grube said that PPM’s biggest hurdle right now is finding a company to buy the power. The company has sent a […]

Carmanah Technologies Inc. (TSX Venture: CMH) has signed an agreement for Australian distribution of its LED (light-emitting diode) lighting technologies. Orion Solar Solutions of Worongary, Queensland, will represent all Carmanah’s solar-powered LED lights for the marine, aviation, transit and road markets in Australia. “We are pleased to be expanding our sales and service capabilities in Australia and increasing our profile in the Asia Pacific region,” states Carmanah’s CEO, Art Aylesworth. “With its modern, rapidly expanding transportation system and receptivity to new technologies, Australia has the potential to keep pace with our success in North America and Europe.” In June 2004, in the AusLink White Paper, the Australian national government committed $11.8 billion to the country’s land transport system over the next five years. This includes upgrades to road and rail systems and links to ports and airports, as well as the implementation of new technologies to solve transport problems. Carmanah’s cost-saving and energy-saving lighting products for transport are already well-known in Australia and Southeast Asia. Carmanah has marine lights installed at various sites throughout New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia including the famous Sydney Harbour. The world’s first solar-powered bus stops, originally developed by Carmanah for the city of London, England, […]

World solar photovoltaic (PV) market installations grew 62% to 927 MW in 2004, according to a SolarBuzz annual PV market report. Growth of 152% to 366 Megawatts in Germany gave it global PV market leadership ahead of Japan, following aggressive Federal initiatives to raise renewable energy use in the country. Japanese and US markets both grew by 27%. Annual production of PV cells increased to a consolidated level of 1146 MW in 2004. Japanese manufacturers contributed 48% of world PV cell production, with the US contributing 11%, compared to 26% five years ago. Silicon feedstock use by PV manufacturers increased 55% in 2004, but the report data shows that limited growth in its supply will constrain PV market expansion this year. Said Craig Stevens, President of Solarbuzz Inc., “Undoubtedly, the major short term industry challenge will be to pace solar cell capacity expansion with silicon feedstock availability.” The worldwide PV industry is on a path to annual revenues of $18.5bn by 2010, according to the report.
