Baskahegan Company, of Brookton, Maine, recently achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) forest management certification for its entire 101,000-acre ownership. Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), an FSC-accredited certifier, audited the Washington and Penobscot County forestland during the summer and fall of 2004. “Our SCS evaluation team confirmed that Baskahegan is a conscientious land steward as well as a civic-minded organization, and we are very pleased to be able to issue an FSC-endorsed certification of exemplary forest management,” said Dr. Robert J. Hrubes, SCS Senior Vice-President.Company President Roger Milliken, Jr. said the Company had chosen to undergo the certification process to gain recognition for its multi-generational approach to forest management. “We wanted to be judged against the highest ecological standards, and to be challenged to become even better stewards of our family’s lands. FSC certification is an ideal vehicle for this. I am grateful to our highly-motivated forestry staff for laying the groundwork for this significant achievement.”The certification of Baskahegan’s lands expands further the certified forestland base in Maine. “The Baskahegan holdings push certified forestland inventory in Maine to more than 7 million acres,” said Governor John Baldacci. “We are seeing more demand each year for products made from certified wood fiber and solid […]
Manufacturers whose bottom lines are threatened by today’s rising energy costs will benefit from the solutions offered by Energy Management Pathfinding, a new report from the Alliance to Save Energy. Learn from ten major corporation case studies including Frito Lay, Shaws, 3M, Kimberly Clark, DuPont and Unilever. The case studies, assembled by the Alliance with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, illustrate their unique energy-management strategies which have improved business performance by reducing costs, building revenue capacity, and containing operating risk.“While many companies are simply trying to cut their energy bills, other firms are using energy-waste reduction as a strategy to boost productivity and avoid the need to build more plants,” said Alliance Director of Industrial Programs Christopher Russell. “These companies generally approach energy management as a process instead of as a collection of scattered projects. Technology continues to play a key role in reducing energy costs, but savings are enhanced and sustained by making energy-smart decisions, from the plant floor up through management and finance people.”The 10 energy management case studies suggest that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to achieving energy savings of 10-20 percent or more. Instead, companies tailor an energy management strategy to reflect […]

Weyerhaeuser’s containerboard mill in Albany, Oregon, earned the Energy Star CHP Award for its 93-megawatt CHP system fueled with biomass and natural gas. The system operates at 70 percent efficiency, requiring 17 percent less fuel than a typical mill, which generates its thermal energy needs onsite but draws its electricity from the power grid. In addition, the California Institute of Technology won an award for a 12.5-megawatt […]
Yesterday, in a 51-49 vote, the U.S. Senate paved the way to allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The U.S. Senate voted against an amendment to strip ANWR instructions from the Senate Budget Resolution. While Bush administration officials hailed the vote, Democrats lashed out at Republicans for getting the vote in through the back door – attaching it to the budget resolution, where fewer votes are needed. NGO’s, who have been working feverishly to bring the few swing votes needed in their favor, said this is only the beginning of the fight. There is a long way to go before the Refuge is opened for oil drilling. Chairman Domenici (NM), long in favor of opening ANWR said: The Senate today affirmed its deep concern for our consumers and our economy. We signaled our concern over dropping fuel inventories, record high energy prices and global uncertainty. We signaled our faith in American ingenuity and technology and we voted our conviction that America must do more to meet its own energy needs. I have argued for months that now is the time to develop ANWR. I congratulate my colleagues on their conviction and their deep commitment to our […]
Companies selling autos in the European Union are not disclosing carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction commitments or strategies to comply with a 7 year-old European Union agreement, according an analysis released by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) Group. “It is unacceptable that, with only three years left to comply with the ACEA Agreement, auto companies have done little to disclose in their annual reports to investors how they plan to meet this voluntary target,” said WRI’s Amanda Sauer, lead author of Transparency Issues with the ACEA Agreement:Are Investors Driving Blindly? “The problem with the ACEA Agreement is that nobody knows what the auto companies are planning to do to bring the industry to its 2008 target.” BMW has disclosed more of its CO2-reduction strategies than the other car companies analyzed, although it could be at risk of substantial future costs under the agreement because it appears to have the highest fleet-wide CO2 emissions in the industry. Yet the report finds that without disclosure on company commitments to meet the agreement, it is impossible to know the cost exposure for BMW or any other company, even though these costs could be significant. The ACEA Agreement establishes […]
In a ceremony attended by more than 400 people, which included representatives from the highest level of the Kuwaiti Government, GE Infrastructure’s Water & Process Technologies business helped dedicate the world’s largest membrane based wastewater filtration project and the company’s first major water project in the Middle East. “Water is the lifeblood of industries and communities around the world, and scarcity, increasing demand and rising costs are driving the need to conserve, reuse and identify new supplies of this essential resource,” said George Oliver, president and CEO of GE’s Water & Process Technologies business. “By 2025, nearly 50% of the world’s population will live in water stressed areas according to the World Meteorological Association and many in the Middle East face this reality today.” The new Sulaibiya wastewater treatment plant, built in a partnership with the Kuwaiti government and Mohammed Abdulmohsin Al-Kharafi & Sons Co., will purify more than one million gallons of wastewater (375, 000 cubic meters/day) each day for use in agricultural and industrial uses. Currently, countries in the Middle East produce more than one half of the world’s desalinated water and experts predict this to increase in the water stressed region. “GE has been expanding its portfolio […]
