Hydrogenics Corporation (Nasdaq: HYGS; TSX: HYG) has signed an agreement with Japan’s Hitachi Zosen Corporation (Hitz) to develop hydrogen fuel cell-based power products. Hydrogenics will combine its expertise in hydrogen fuel cell power systems with Hitz’ power technology and experience with Japanese power markets. “Japan is one the key countries leading the hydrogen economy, and this agreement with Hitz will help Hydrogenics take advantage of these opportunities,” said Pierre Rivard, Hydrogenics’ president and CEO. “This relationship will allow us to showcase our HyPM technology to the Japanese market, while allowing Hitz to enter into power markets that are currently untapped.” The collaboration between Hitz and Hydrogenics will focus on stationary power applications, but will also investigate markets for transportation and hydrogen generation. Although the program is primarily meant to support ongoing stewardship of private agricultural lands, this year’s program sign-up includes a renewable energy and energy efficiency component. Eligible producers will receive compensation for conducting energy audits, for cutting their energy use, for converting to renewable energy fuels (such as biodiesel or ethanol), and for implementing renewable energy production, including methane production as well as wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal energy. On March 16th, George W. Bush nominated US Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz to serve as the future President of the World Bank. Within 30 hours, European heads of state received a multi-country petition signed by more than 1,300 organizations and individuals from 68 countries who denounced the nomination and called on European governments to reject it. The US nomination of Wolfowitz, who is recognized as the key architect of the US invasion, war and occupation of Iraq and a strong proponent of unilateralism in US foreign policy, has elicited a firestorm of protest from development experts and citizens around the world.
