Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) significantly exceeded product recovery goals set for its last fiscal year and today announced expanded global environmental goals for recycling, environmental design and energy efficiency, including a 50% product recovery increase. Last year, Dell committed to increase product recovery from customers by 50% as measured by weight recovered. Strong growth of Dell’s Asset Recovery Services in the U.S. helped the company recover more than 11 million kilograms (24 million pounds) of used product from customers, a 234% increase over fiscal year 2004 results. Worldwide, Dell recovered nearly 30 million kilograms (66 million pounds) of product during the period. While expecting more modest growth rates over time, Dell remains committed to increasing product recovery rates, as reflected by its goal of another 50% product recovery increase during the company’s fiscal year 2006. Dell has set three broad targets for the company’s Design for Environment Initiatives (DfE) initiatives: – Enable the avoidance of 10 million tons of equivalent CO2 emissions by fiscal year 2008, the equivalent of removing approximately 1.5 million cars from use worldwide, through improvements in energy efficiency of Dell products. – Avoid the use of 52,000 tons of lead and 33,000 tons of brominated flame retardants by […]

FuelCell Energy Inc. (NasdaqNM:FCEL) announced it has redesigned the 250-kilowatt (kW) Direct FuelCell (DFC) power plant resulting in a 25 percent cost reduction. This is part of FuelCell Energy’s rolling three-year cost-out program that targets a 20-25 percent cost reduction per year. In addition to reduced capital costs, the DFC300MA power plant — the new name for the sub-megawatt unit — is expected to result in lower routine maintenance expenses thanks to its modular three-piece design. This modular architecture, with separate skids for the mechanical balance of plant, electronic balance of plant and the DFC module, is expected to enhance serviceability due to greater accessibility for each component. “Experience with our fleet of DFC power plants at global customer sites, including feedback specific to existing customer applications, provided us with a rich source of data for driving top-to-bottom improvements,” said R. Daniel Brdar, FuelCell Energy’s Chief Operating Officer. “We’ve evaluated every step on an ongoing basis, from initial construction, testing, conditioning, delivery, installation and serviceability that has enabled us to improve the quality and lower costs of our ultra-clean DFC products.” Additional improvements in the DFC300MA power plant include modifying certain subsystems, so parts and materials may be sourced from […]

GT Equipment Technologies Inc., a company that designs, manufactures, assembles, programs and installs turn-key fabrication lines for all three stages of the photovoltaic manufacturing chain – wafers, cells and modules — announced the company generated more revenue growth, employment growth and productivity growth in the fiscal year just ended, March 31, 2005, than at any time in its 11-year history. The growth was in the company’s solar division, GT Solar Technologies, Inc. The $38 million of business already booked for the next fiscal year far exceeds the nearly $23 million in total revenues for the Company’s fiscal year ended March 31, 2005. While revenues have more than doubled, productivity and employment growth have both increased as well. Equipment shipped in March of 2005 increased by a factor of 4X over equipment shipped in any given month during the previous year. The increased shipments are a result of exceptional productivity gains from the company’s workforce using an advanced manufacturing process that allows for improvements in the manufacturing of the equipment while maintaining the ability to customize orders. GT Equipment Technologies has more than doubled its workforce in the past 9 months to 75 and is still hiring, especially assemblers, technicians and […]
