Carmanah Awarded $900 Million Contract with Chicago

Carmanah Technologies Corporation (TSX Venture: CMH) has been contracted by PACE Suburban Bus of Chicago, Illinois, to supply its proprietary i-STOP(TM) solar-powered LED bus stop lighting systems. Awarded through a public bid process, this contract is valued at up to $885,000. Installation is scheduled over the next five years with the first $194,000 in i-STOP(TM) systems to be delivered before the end of August. PACE is the suburban bus division of Chicago’s Regional Transportation Authority and the 14th largest bus service in North America. PACE serves 130,000 daily riders throughout Chicago’s suburbs via 240 routes covering 3,500 square miles. The Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC) estimates the population of PACE’s service area to be approximately 5.2 million and expects it to grow to more than 6.2 million by 2020. The i-STOP(TM) is a unique solar-powered LED bus stop lighting system, which installs on all standard bus stop poles. Utilizing Carmanah’s patented solar-powered LED technology, the i-STOP(TM) bus stop lighting system is completely self-contained, which means no trenching, wiring, traffic disruption or site remediation is required. http://www.transitlights.com Website: [sorry this link is no longer available]

ZENON to Install its Technology for Olympic Village in China

ZENON Environmental Inc. (TSX: ZEN; ZEN.NV.A; OTC: ZNEVF; ZNEAF) has received a purchase order to provide its ZeeWeed membrane for tertiary treatment in China’s Olympic Village. The order is valued at approximately $5 million. China is undertaking a massive program to improve its infrastructure as the country prepares to host the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Among the country’s many initiatives is the treatment of municipal sewage, with emphasis on reuse in an effort to relieve the growing water shortage in Beijing. ZENON’s membranes will be treating secondary effluent from the Qinghe Wastewater Treatment Plant not far from the Olympic Village. The treated effluent will be reused to improve and enhance the visual appeal of the village; such as providing water for lagoons and ponds, in addition to being used for landscape irrigation. Work on the project is already underway with an expected construction time of 12-14 months. Organizers are planning to have an operational facility by the middle of 2006. It is estimated that by 2008, nearly 90% of urban sewage will be collected and treated, with approximately 50% of that being recycled and reused for various non-potable purposes. After the Olympic Games are over, the government plans to […]

Energy Innovations Secures $16.5 Million

Energy Innovations, Inc., currently developing the world’s first low-cost rooftop photovoltaic (PV) solar concentrator system, has received $16.5 million in new venture funding. The round was led by MDV-Mohr Davidow Ventures, based in Menlo Park, CA, with additional participation from founding investor, Idealab, based in Pasadena, CA. The new funds will be used to further the company’s sales and product development initiatives and for company operations. Said MDV general partner Erik Straser, who will join the Energy Innovations board of directors, “They have made some important breakthroughs that have the potential to drive down the cost of solar electricity, and we look forward to working with them on commercializing these new technologies.” Energy Innovations is developing a new low-cost rooftop solar system, called the Sunflower. Each Sunflower module is composed of an array of mirrors that track the sun throughout the day and year, concentrating its light onto a small panel of PV cells that generate electricity. By replacing large amounts of very expensive, silicon-based PV cells with inexpensive mirrors, Energy Innovations expects to drive down the cost of solar electricity by half or more. The company is currently testing the Sunflower on its own roof in Pasadena and will […]
