Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ:PLUG), a leader in providing clean, reliable on-site energy, and Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD; NASDAQ:BLDP), a leading developer of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, announced they have been awarded a $2M program by the U.S. Department of Defense to develop an advanced prototype PEM fuel cell system to support Defense Continuity of Operations (COOP). Under this program, Plug Power and Ballard will jointly develop a next-generation prototype PEM fuel cell power solution to be used in backup power applications. Plug Power will act as the systems integrator, using a Ballard fuel cell stack for evaluation and potential use in COOP programs for the U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security. The project represents the first phase of Plug Power-Ballard collaboration and, if successful, could lead to further development work towards a portable, highly durable, extended-run, zero emission prototype backup power solution for COOP satellite locations. Fuel cell power could help ensure that these locations remain operational, even when other power sources have failed. “Collaboration among fuel cell developers, systems integrators and governments will accelerate the commercialization of fuel cell technology,” said John Sheridan, Ballard’s Chairman of the Board and Interim President and Chief Executive […]

Millennium Cell Inc. (NASDAQ: MCEL), a hydrogen battery technology developer, announced its soldier power program has been allocated $1.7 million of funding in the fiscal year 2006 Defense Appropriations Bill. The soldier power program is a joint effort with Protonex Technology Corporation which is funded by the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army. The defense bill funding will support the procurement of Protonex 30-watt portable soldier power systems (“P2”) for use in reliability and field testing to be conducted by the U.S. military throughout 2006. The Protonex P2 power system utilizes chemical hydride fuel cartridges with Millennium Cell’s Hydrogen on Demand technology which are integrated with Protonex’ advanced fuel cell technology. In addition to procurement funding, the budget allocation provides substantial funding for next-generation fuel cartridge system development. The main advantage provided by this technology is the ability to reduce the weight burden on soldiers who carry about 30 pounds of batteries for a 72-hour mission. The P2 system delivers a 60% weight reduction versus incumbent battery technologies at a lower cost. The next generation of technology development to be funded by this allocation will result in fuel cartridges that weigh significantly less than those in the P2 system. […]

UQM Technologies, Inc. (UQM) has been awarded a $1.08 million contract supplement to an existing U.S. Air Force contract to convert a conventional one-half ton pickup truck to all-electric operation using an optimized configuration of currently available advanced technologies. The contract supplement expands the scope of work to add the development of an electronic motor/generator controller that utilizes high operating temperature silicon carbide power switching modules. The controller is being developed for the USAF Advanced Power Technology Office of the 542nd Combat Sustainment Wing at Robins Air Force Base in cooperation with the U.S. Army National Automotive Center and Mississippi State University. The USAF expect to field test the controller in at least one of the Air Force’s hybrid electric vans, buses and/or in the all-electric pickup truck powered by lithium ion batteries currently being built by the Company. The contract supplement increases the total contract value to $1.83 million and extends the expected completion date to March 31, 2007. Initial delivery and testing of the all-electric pickup truck will not be impacted by the contract supplement and is scheduled for March 2006.
