Hydrogenics Corporation (TSX:HYG; NASDAQ:HYGS), has been awarded a contract to supply hydrogen for one of the first U.S hydrogen fueling stations to use electricity from a wind power resource to produce hydrogen from water. In this case electricity generated by wind resources either owned or contracted by Basin Electric will be used. The contract is with Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Bismarck, N.D., to supply an electrolyzer-based hydrogen refuelling station for installation in Minot, N.D. In addition to the core electrolyzer module, Hydrogenics is supplying compression, storage and dispenser equipment as part of the contract. The hydrogen produced will be used to refuel hydrogen-powered vehicles, demonstrating a linkage between wind power and vehicle refueling. Recognizing the challenge presented by the intermittency and varying outputs of wind power, an important element of the project is the development of various control schemes by which the electrolyzer can interface with the electrical output of wind turbines to optimize fuel production, particularly during low electricity demand periods. The project will demonstrate the ability and practicality of making and using hydrogen energy with zero carbon emissions, using excess wind power that might otherwise be under-utilized. This capability can potentially lead to significantly enhanced overall efficiencies of […]

MTI MicroFuel Cells Inc. (MTI Micro), developer of Mobion micro fuel cell technology and a subsidiary of Mechanical Technology Incorporated (Nasdaq: MKTY), announced that it has signed a Market Development Agreement with SES AMERICOM Inc. (SES AMERICOM), a subsidiary of SES GLOBAL, a world leader in satellite services and satellite-centric networks. As part of the agreement, MTI Micro will work with SES AMERICOM to determine and evaluate the use and integration of MTI Micro’s Mobion technology into AMERICOM products that may benefit from alternative energy sources such as fuel cells. The two companies will work jointly on market identification, the development and delivery of prototypes, qualification processes for any resulting products and the development of a market entry strategy for those products. “This agreement with SES AMERICOM, a leading provider of satellite services in North America, brings us closer to product readiness and the commercialization of Mobion for the military and industrial markets, which is a key focus of our efforts in 2006,” said Juan Becerra, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for MTI Micro. “Micro fuel cells can offer significant advantages, such as longer run time, for portable products and back-up power solutions,” said Robert Phelan, SES AMERICOM’s […]

Capstone Turbine Corporation (Nasdaq: CPST), a leading manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced that two of its 30-kilowatt microturbines currently operating at New England Gas Company in Rhode Island surpassed a milestone of more than 45,000 hours of near continuous operation. “New England Gas Company, which serves more than a quarter-million customers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, was an early supporter of distributed generation,” said Capstone CEO John R. Tucker. “Their two Capstone C30s have been running nearly non-stop for more than five years, accumulating more than 45,000 hours of operation thus far.” Capstone MicroTurbines are very low emission, very high efficiency generators of power and heat used to reduce energy costs and increase energy security at a variety of businesses and public facilities. With only one moving part and no need for oil, lubricant, coolant, other hazardous materials or even water, Capstone MicroTurbines are most often deployed in combined heat and power (CHP) applications in which the exhaust heat is used to heat water or to drive absorption chillers – which create cold from heat energy instead of electric energy – in combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) applications. Several examples of Capstone’s CHP and CCHP installations will be […]
SatCon Technology Corporation (Nasdaq NM: SATC), a developer and manufacturer of power electronics and motors for the alternative energy markets, announced that its Applied Technology Division with facilities in Boston, Massachusetts, and Linthicum, Maryland, has been certified as compliant to the internationally recognized ISO 9001:2000 standard. This standard defines the requirements for a Quality Management System designed to ensure that a company’s products consistently meet customer requirements, and that a company’s processes are continuously improved in the interest of customer satisfaction. SatCon Applied Technology’s Quality Management System incorporates all of the procedures affecting delivery of finished product to its customers – including preparation of proposals, contracts, material ordering and handling, engineering design, documentation, test and shipping. Certification auditing services were provided by International Quality Registrars (IQR) Corporation of Mt. Airy, Maryland. A portion of the training expenses to implement the Quality Management System was provided by a grant from the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund. The Workforce Training Fund is a state fund financed entirely by Massachusetts employers to provide resources to Massachusetts businesses and workers to train current and newly hired employees. Martek Biosciences Corporation (Nasdaq: MATK) announced that infant formula company Medici Medical Ltd. has signed a license agreement for use of Martek’s docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) in infant formula sold in Israel. The omega-3 fatty acid DHA and the omega-6 fatty acid ARA are naturally present in breast milk. Clinical studies have demonstrated cognitive and visual benefits for those infants receiving DHA and ARA supplemented formula. Martek’s proprietary blend of DHA and ARA is the only source of these nutrients that the FDA has cleared for use in U.S. infant formula, and is currently being sold by the Company’s licensees in supplemented formulas in over 60 countries around the world. “The Medici Medical agreement is yet another example of how formula manufacturers are recognizing the benefits of adding Martek’s DHA and ARA to formula, both for their business and the infants they serve. It is heartening to know that with every new license agreement, more and more infants around the world will benefit from Martek’s DHA and ARA,” said Henry “Pete” Linsert, Jr., Chairman and CEO of Martek Biosciences Corporation. Walgreen Co. (NYSE, Nasdaq: WAG) and ImaginIt Inc., a Denver-based clean energy solutions company, have agreed to install solar electric systems in 96 stores and two distribution centers in California and 16 stores in New Jersey. The new systems will generate more than 13.8 million kilowatt-hours per year, making this the largest solar project ever completed in the United States. The first systems are expected to be operational in early 2006. “Climate change, air pollution and depletion of natural resources are some of the most significant environmental problems facing the world today,” said Tom Bergseth, divisional vice president of facilities, planning and design for Walgreens. “We’re excited about implementing this progressive approach toward using clean, renewable energy to benefit the communities we serve.” Solar roof tiles will enable each facility to generate between 20 and 50 percent of its own electricity on site. The stores will host solar electric systems that will replace energy equivalent to more than 22 million gallons of gas and avoid hundreds of tons of carbon dioxide emissions comparable to growing more than 5 million tree seedlings. “This is an unprecedented environmental initiative,” said ImaginIt president Patrina Eiffert. “Walgreens is demonstrating a level of social responsibility […]
