Beacon Power Corporation (NASDAQ: BCON) recently delivered, installed and connected a scale-power Smart Energy Matrix demonstration system to the electricity grid in Amsterdam, New York. After arriving at the site, the system was connected and turned up to full power, and is now following and responding to live ISO-specified requirements to demonstrate frequency regulation. The project, jointly funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Storage Program, is the second such scale-power system Beacon has delivered, in addition to a similar system in California. In the coming months the system will be rigorously tested by NYSERDA, in conjunction with Beacon Power and the U.S. DOE, to demonstrate how Beacon’s flywheel energy storage technology has the potential to be used to provide frequency regulation services on a commercially competitive basis. The NYSERDA system was also engineered to provide additional application capabilities, including uninterruptible power (UPS) to the site, and volt-amperes reactive power, or VARs, which help to stabilize the local grid. These functions will be evaluated later in the testing process and assessed as to their commercial potential. “Building, delivering and successfully connecting this latest demonstration system is another […]

FuelCell Energy, Inc. (NasdaqNM:FCEL) has announced that Tokyo Gas has initiated a program to evaluate a Direct FuelCell (DFC) power plant for introducing these units to customers of its energy and industrial gas divisions. The unit is currently located at Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ factory in Akashi, Japan, where Tokyo Gas will evaluate the power plant under a variety of expected operating conditions focusing particularly on grid interconnection performance. Tokyo Gas has agreed to install this DFC300A power plant at its new R&D center in Tsurumi in the second quarter of 2006. Tokyo Gas is one of Japan’s largest installers of natural gas-fueled distributed generation systems for high efficiency, combined heat and power applications. According to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report, installation of natural gas cogeneration systems has grown to 1196 MW from 765 MW during the past five years, an increase of 44 percent. This trend is expected to continue in the years ahead. Tokyo Gas is considering adding DFC products to its energy generation portfolio, pending the outcome of its evaluation, to address additions to the current 2.2 GW of gas-fired cogeneration at 2000 locations throughout the country. “Tokyo Gas is the largest gas supplier in Japan,” said […]
SatCon Technology Corporation (Nasdaq NM: SATC) has been awarded a contract from BAE Systems to develop a Starter Generator for the Future Combat System (FCS) Multifunction Utility/Logistics Equipment (MULE) unmanned ground vehicle. The MULE vehicle is one of the major systems in the FCS program and includes three variants of the 2.5-ton vehicle that provide transport, countermine, and light assault support for the Future Force war fighter. SatCon’s President and COO, Millard Firebaugh, stated, “SatCon is pleased to be participating in the Army’s FCS transformation program. This contract supports our stated strategic initiative to focus on hybrid vehicle technology and applications. The FCS program is the major military ground vehicle program, and enables SatCon to develop vehicle power technology for the military that we can then leverage for commercial and consumer applications.” The award expands on SatCon’s portfolio of vehicle power technology with the development of an integrated starter/generator (ISG) based on advanced and proprietary SatCon permanent magnet machinery design concepts. This technology has direct applicability to both military and civilian hybrid electric vehicle applications and represents a major step forward in “under the hood” power density. SatCon’s Applied Technology division will design, fabricate, test, and deliver three Starter Generator […]
