Can Farm-Raised Fish Help Save Oceans?

By Paul Greenberg, June 18, 2006 On a bright, clear Arctic morning this March, I found myself in the Norwegian city of Tromso, staring down into a large green fiberglass tub in which several hundred sexually aroused cod described a slow, lazy circle in the temperature-controlled water below. Normally this is the kind of thing I enjoy. As a fisherman, I like being in the presence of fish. The living animal is somehow exhilarating, whether glimpsed crashing bait alongside a jetty or glowing vague and green 20 feet below the surface. A fish’s appearance in the wild feels special and makes the fisherman feel lucky. But luck had nothing to do with the cod swimming in the Norwegian tub that day. To the contrary, the fish in Tromso were there because of calculated human effort, and their stay in Tromso would allow them to participate in the culmination of a century of applied science. They were generation F0, the founding generation in a selective breeding program that aims to create a whole new race of cod. The progeny of wild cod gathered up from a variety of different fiords and offshore shoals, they were implanted with identifying microchips and paired […]

Martek Signs Agreement with General Mills

Martek Biosciences Corp. (Nasdaq: MATK) has entered into a 15-year docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) license and supply agreement with General Mills, Inc. Under the terms of the agreement, General Mills may develop certain food products containing Martek DHA(TM) and must purchase, subject to certain exceptions, substantially all of its DHA needs from Martek for these products in the United States and other designated territories. There are no minimum purchase requirements or other financial commitments to Martek. General Mills intends for the initial launch of a product containing Martek DHA(TM) to take place in 2007. For all products containing Martek DHA(TM), General Mills will display the Martek DHA(TM) logo on the product packaging, and it will also include the Martek DHA(TM) logo in related marketing, advertising and promotional materials. “The General Mills agreement is another step toward widespread use of Martek’s vegetarian source of DHA in foods and beverages. I believe that people’s health will be better for it, and I applaud General Mills for taking this action,” said Henry “Pete” Linsert, Jr., Martek’s Chairman and CEO. DHA is a long chain omega-3 fatty acid that supports brain, eye and cardiovascular health throughout life. There is a large and growing body of […]

DayStar Technologies Achieves Performance Milestones

DayStar Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: DSTI), a thin-film solar developer and manufacturer, announced it achived key performance milestones on TerraFoil(TM) cells. As an alternative to wafer Silicon cells, DayStar’s TerraFoil(TM) cells have the potential to dramatically lower photovoltaic module costs below current levels, which could significantly expand the market and accelerate the use of solar power systems worldwide. Recent results from measurements performed in DayStar’s characterization laboratory have shown solar cells produced from its Gen I line achieved 16.9 percent total area conversion efficiencies on (1.1 cm2) glass substrates and 15.7 percent on flexible metal substrates. Similar size TerraFoil(TM) cells made on their commercial-scale Gen II platform have achieved 13 percent efficiencies. However, the most significant achievement was the demonstration of a 13.5 percent larger area device (14 cm2) produced using processes being developed for their high-capacity Gen III(TM) production platform. “These results further advance this year’s mission of demonstrating product efficacy and are very encouraging as we enter into commercial scale production with Gen II,” commented Jack McCaffrey, Vice President of Manufacturing, DayStar Technologies. “The larger area cell performance achieved clearly demonstrates the viability of our Gen III(TM) process,” said Bob Weiss, Vice President of Advanced Technologies of the Equipment […]

Whole Foods Market Stops Selling Live Lobsters

After evaluating the entire supply chain process, Whole Foods Market (Nasdaq: WFMI) announced it will stop selling live lobsters immediately. “Although we discovered significant improvements are possible from capture up to in-store tank conditions, we are not yet sufficiently satisfied that the process of selling live lobsters is in line with our commitment to humane treatment and quality of life for animals,” said Margaret Wittenberg, vice president of quality standards for Whole Foods Market. “At this time, we believe it is too difficult to maintain consistent conditions throughout the entire supply chain to ensure the health and well-being of lobsters outside their natural environment for such a long period of time. Many lobsters are held in storage facilities for several months.” For the time being, the Company will only sell frozen raw and cooked lobster products from suppliers meeting specific quality standards for humane treatment, handling and processing. “If at some time in the future we become convinced that sufficient improvements are possible in the handling of live lobsters to ensure humane treatment throughout the supply chain, we will consider resuming the sale of live lobsters at Whole Foods Market,” Wittenberg said. In November 2005, Whole Foods Market assembled an […]
