Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc., (Nasdaq: QTWW) has been awarded a contract by Synthesis Energy System, Inc. (SES) (OTC: SYMX) to develop modular stationary power generators that operate on hydrogen-rich synfuel for deployment in China. The synfuel-fueled power generators will be an integral component of syngas and co-generation facilities being developed in China by SES for large industrial customers. SES is working with large industrial customers to develop syngas and co-/poly-generation facilities. SES is developing projects based on innovative gasification technologies that convert low cost and abundant indigenous fuels, like coal, into high value commodities, such as synfuel, thus reducing dependence on traditional petroleum or natural gas feedstocks. SES co-generation projects can cleanly produce multiple commodities, such as electricity, steam, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and oxygen for use in diversified manufacturing operations from computer chips to petrochemicals, or as a basic building block for synthetic fuel production, including methanol, ethanol, and diesel fuel. Quantum will apply its alternative fuel and hydrogen engine expertise to the development and optimization of the stationary power generators. Quantum will engineer a state-of-the-art OEM-caliber hydrogen-rich synfuel system, optimize the performance of the generator system, and perform verification testing of the systems. Cree, Inc. has announced LED efficacy test results that set a new benchmark for the LED industry. Cree reported results of 131 lumens per watt white LED efficacy, confirmed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Tests were performed using prototype white LEDs with Cree EZBright(TM) LED chips operating at 20 mA and a correlated color temperature of 6027 K. “This is the highest level of efficacy that has been publicly reported for a white LED and raises the bar for the LED industry,” said Scott Schwab, Cree general manager, LED chips. “This result once again demonstrates Cree’s leadership in LED technology and provides a glimpse into the future as to why we believe LED-based lighting products could not only save energy, but also change the way people use light.” “Technical advancements at the component level are critical to growing the emerging white LED lighting space. Cree’s results speak to the exciting developments underway that will enable new white light applications and subsequently facilitate market adoption,” stated Fritz Morgan, chief technology officer for Color Kinetics, a leading innovator of LED lighting systems and technologies. Lumens-per-watt is the standard used by the lighting industry to measure the […]

U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, made the following statement on Tuesday during the full committee markup of several bills addressing energy issues. All five bills passed unanimously by voice vote. “Today we consider five bills, all aimed at addressing today’s energy issues. They involve energy conservation, consumer education, renewable and alternative energy. H.R. 5534 was introduced by Reps. Rogers and Fossella. It is a bill that would establish a grant program in the Department of Energy’s Clean Cities Program to expand the availability of alternative fuels. It is funded by the penalties collected under the CAFE program. “We are at a crossroads with alternative fuels in this country. More than 6 million vehicles can actually use E85, but their drivers have few places in which to purchase this fuel. There are only about 800 E85 fueling stations across the entire United States. E85 reduces dependence on foreign oil, but the value of a tank full of E85 diminishes considerably if everybody has to drive a hundred miles to fill up. This bill will take CAFE penalties, which in 2004 totaled over $20 million, and spend that money to build a network of […]
