Dell to Launches Free Recycling in U.S.

Dell’s (NASDAQ:DELL) free recycling program for U.S. customers is available online today (Sept. 29). It includes home pick-up of used Dell-branded computers and peripheral equipment at no-charge. The service is not tied to a replacement purchase. Customers enter a product identification number online and print a pre-paid shipping label and an opportunity to schedule home pick-up for shipping the used computer. Dell has offered a no-charge recycling program for Dell-branded products in Europe since November 2003 and currently offers no-charge consumer recycling in Canada. The company announced a global recycling commitment in June that is expected to be implemented by November. Dell supports a policy that would make all producers responsible for offering recovery and recycling services for their own brand products from consumers at no charge. Dell also believes the marketplace is best positioned to increase efficiency in collection, recycling and design of products, and any legislation should not include fees or creation of new government infrastructure for collecting and recycling electronics. Global Warming Promo on MTV Tonight

Tonight, MTV begins airing a 30-second promo developed in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and other partners to raise awareness about the problem of climate change. The promo features musicians from several bands -including Blackalicious, Rusted Root, Death Cab for Cutie, Matisyahu and others – urging MTV’s viewers to take immediate action to fight global warming. “We all have a stake in doing something about climate change, and we have to act on the right information,” said WRI Managing Director Paul Faeth, who – along with other WRI experts and partners – helped brief the featured musicians during backstage sessions at this summer’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee. “This partnership with MTV helps us get the facts to an important audience.” The promo spot is debuting at a time when young people are demonstrating a dramatic shift in how they view environmental issues. “In our latest MTV/CBS News poll, 81 percent of young people say steps need to be taken right away to counter global warming,” said Ian Rowe, vice president, Strategic Partnerships and Public Affairs, MTV. “By making this public-service announcement part of MTV’s year-long Break the Addiction campaign, we can further educate and mobilize […]

SunPower Enters Ingot Joint Venture

SunPower Corporation (Nasdaq: SPWR), a leading solar panel manufacturer, has entered into a joint venture with Woongjin Coway to manufacture mono-crystalline silicon ingots. The joint venture will operate in Korea, with polysilicon to be supplied primarily from DC Chemical, Korea’s largest chemical company, with whom SunPower previously announced a major supply agreement. SunPower expects to purchase approximately $250 million of silicon ingot from the joint venture through a five-year supply agreement, which SunPower expects to execute upon formation of the joint venture. The venture is expected to begin manufacturing in the second half of 2007, and is projected to grow at a rate consistent with increasing polysilicon supply from DC Chemical. SunPower will contribute approximately $5 million of capital and technology expertise, and will sell polysilicon to the joint venture, and procure silicon ingot from the joint venture. SunPower’s joint venture partner, Woongjin Coway, is a Korean equipment manufacturer and one of Korea’s leading providers of environmental products. Woongjin Coway will contribute a similar level of capital, as well as operations and Korean marketing expertise. “SunPower is committed to expanding its silicon portfolio,” said PM Pai, chief operating officer, of SunPower Corporation. “Investing in a Korean- based ingot pulling enterprise […]

Richard Branson Proposes Plan to Cut Aviation Emissions

Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin Atlantic, is championing a plan that would reduce global warming emissions from the airline industry by 25%. The actions he is proposing can vastly improve energy efficiency today. He has written to airlines such as British Airways, American Airlines and Easyjet; engine and aircraft manufacturers such as Rolls Royce and Boeing; and airport operators including BAA in the UK, urging them to support a new cross-industry forum which would implement practical ways of tackling climate change. In his letter to aviation industry leaders, Sir Richard writes, “We need to accelerate the pace at which we reduce aviation’s impact on the environment. We cannot ignore that aviation does create environmental problems (around 2% of global CO2 emissions), although equally it produces significant economic and social benefits (8% of the world’s GDP).” At the heart of its vision is the creation of “starting grids” for all aircraft departures. A starting grid is a holding area, close to the runway, consisting of several parking bays for aircraft. It means that aircraft can be towed closer to a runway before take-off, substantially reducing the time that engines need to be running. After being towed by a small tug […]
