Pacific Ethanol Completes Construction of First Plant

Pacific Ethanol, Inc. (Nasdaq: PEIX) has completed its first ethanol production facility in Madera, California. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on October 16th and operations will begin the next day. It’s expected to reach capacity of 35 million gallons a year by mid November, 2006. “This is a significant milestone for Pacific Ethanol. The startup of the Madera Plant will contribute ethanol production revenues during the 4th quarter of this year, ahead of our internal target date,” observed Neil Koehler, CEO of Pacific Ethanol, Inc. “We anticipate it will take roughly thirty days to bring the plant up to full capacity, and that from mid-November forward the plant will be producing ethanol at or above our designed level of 35 million gallons per year. Our second plant in Boardman, Oregon remains on schedule for completion by the end of the second quarter of 2007.” Koehler concluded by noting, “We remain on schedule to develop 220 million gallons of production capacity by the middle of 2008 and 420 million gallons by the end of 2010.”

House of Representatives Votes to Strengthen Renewables Research

The House of Representatives has passed H.R.6203, the Alternative Energy Research and Development Act, introduced by Energy Subcommittee Chairman Judy Biggert (R-IL). It covers a wide range of energy technologies, including batteries, biofuels, hydrogen, solar, wind, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, as well as energy programs such as green buildings and green energy education. An earlier version of the bill (H.R. 5656) passed the Science Committee in June. H.R. 6203 includes language that was originally in the following bills: H.R.5634, Advanced Energy Initiative Act of 2006, by Chairman Biggert; H.R.5633, Energy Efficient Buildings Act of 2006, by Chairman Biggert; H.R.5643, Energy Technology Transfer Act, by Chairman Biggert;H.R.5538 Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Act of 2006, by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX); H.R.5594, Solar Utilization Now (SUN) Demonstration Act of 2006, by Rep. Smith; H.R.5644, Green Energy Education Act of 2006, by Rep. Michael T. McCaul (R-TX). Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) said, “We have to face the fact that we cannot meet today’s energy needs much less tomorrow’s with yesterday’s energy infrastructure and technology,” Chairman Biggert said. “We must reduce our reliance on expensive natural gas and Middle Eastern oil, and instead encourage the use of clean, efficient alternatives […]

145 Businesses, Groups Issue Sustainable Energy Blueprint

Today, 145 businesses, environmental organizations, and other groups (representing 37 states) released the “Sustainable Energy Blueprint” – a policy paper that outlines a “plausible strategy for achieving a no-nuclear, low-carbon, highly-efficient and sustainable energy future.” It provides a timeframe and series of policy recommendations for rapidly expanding the use of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies to enable a dramatic reduction in greenhouse gases while simultaneously phasing out nuclear power and ending most energy imports. The “Sustainable Energy Blueprint” argues that three primary, longer-term objectives for the nation’s energy policy should be: a.) reducing greenhouse gas emissions to a level consistent with a world-wide goal of global climate stabilization (assumes curbing U.S. CO2 emissions by 60-80% from current levels by mid-century); b.) eliminating U.S. energy imports (i.e., oil and natural gas – now 58% and 15% respectively), while reducing overall use of oil and natural gas; c.) phasing out the current generation of nuclear power while substantially curbing the production and consumption of fossil fuels, by increasing the use of energy efficiency and making a transition to sustainable, environmentally safer renewable energy sources. Towards this end, it suggests a 2025 energy scenario in which total energy use is reduced by […]
