American Superconductor Receives Follow-on Order from Windtec

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC), a leading superconductor manufacturer, announced it has received a follow-on order for 450 PowerModule(TM) PM1000 systems from Windtec Systemtechnik GmbH (Windtec). Windtec, based in Austria, is a developer and licensor of proprietary wind turbine system designs and a developer and supplier of wind turbine electrical systems. Windtec will package the PowerModule systems with other electronic components for one of China’s largest domestic wind turbine manufacturers. This new order is a three-fold increase over the previous PowerModule order from Windtec, which was announced in February 2006. According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), China’s installed base of wind generated electricity is expected to grow from 1,260 MW in 2005 to 2,000 MW by the end of 2006, a 59% annual growth rate. GWEC forecasts that the installed base will more than double to 4,750 MW over the next four years, and according to a Chinese State plan, it will reach 20,000 to 30,000 MW in 15 years. “AMSC and Windtec have worked closely together to customize PM1000 systems to provide voltage regulation and electrical controls for several Windtec wind energy system designs,” said Windtec President Gerald Hehenberger. “AMSC’s PowerModule systems are best-in-class, and they provide […]

Cree Delivers the First 160-Lumen White Power LED

Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE), a leader in LED solid-state lighting components, announced new benchmarks for power LED brightness and efficacy with the release of the newest white Cree XLamp® 7090 power LED. This new XLamp LED, available in volume quantities, produces luminous flux of up to 95 lumens or 85 lumens per watt at 350 mA, and up to 160 lumens at 700 mA. The new XLamp LED was designed to enable general lighting applications, such as street lighting, retail high bay lighting and parking garage low bay lighting, as well as to vastly improve the light quality in consumer applications such as flashlights. LED technology has been sufficiently bright for many general illumination applications for some time. “Cree LEDs are achieving efficacy levels formerly delivered only by the most efficient traditional lighting sources, including fluorescent bulbs. We have established a new class of LED performance,” notes Mike Dunn, Cree general manager and vice president, lighting and backlighting LEDs. The Cree LED research and development efforts were enabled in part through funding from the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Program, within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and also in part through funding from the Department of Commerce’s […]

Ethanol Policies Would Shift Bush Rhetoric into Reality

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), President Bush is right to support the development of ethanol into America’s primary transportation fuel, but he and Congress must enact forward-thinking policies to bring this fuel quickly to the vehicles and pumps across the nation. In his February, 2006 State of the Union address, the president mentioned the potential of ethanol, and promised $150 million in research money into advanced ethanol fuels. But this is just a fraction of the amount authorized in last year’s Energy Policy Act for research and development and commercialization of biofuels like ethanol. “The president is on a forward-looking road by supporting these advanced fuels, but he’s keeping his foot off the gas pedal when American farmers and families want to go full speed ahead,” said Nathanael Greene, an NRDC senior policy analyst. “His administration and Congress need to enact policies that will advance these fuels quickly and affordably to move America beyond oil and cut global warming pollution.” According to NRDC analysis and advice from biofuel experts, below are the four things Washington could do now to increase the flow of ethanol, safely and affordably: Invest in a package of research, development and demonstration. To […]
