Martek Biosciences Corporation (Nasdaq: MATK) announced that now all of its DHA omega-3 products have been approved by Health Canada for use as food ingredients in most foods. The approval allows for per serving levels of not less than 8 mg and not more than 100mg of Martek’s DHA. Martek’s DHA omega-3 oils are marketed to consumers and appear as an ingredient on food packaging under the brand name life’sDHA(TM). “Martek will be better equipped to compete for the DHA-enriched food market in Canada with this additional approval,” said Steve Dubin, Martek’s CEO. Martek’s life’sDHA(TM) contains the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), the key omega-3 fatty acid for brain, eye and heart health and function. Numerous scientific studies demonstrate that people of all ages, from infants to adults, may benefit from an adequate supply of DHA omega-3 in the diet. Yet, despite its importance, natural food sources of DHA omega-3 are limited, making it difficult for many people to get enough DHA omega-3 in their diets. In June 2006, another DHA omega-3 product by Martek was also approved by Health Canada for use as a food ingredient. Martek’s DHA oils have been approved for use in infant formula […]
The insurance industry should do more to address the growing impact of climate change-induced damages, according to a new report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Allianz Group, one of the world’s largest insurance providers. The report, Climate Change and Insurance: An Agenda for Action in the United States, examines the latest scientific findings about climate change, including the impacts of forest fires, storms and floods, and the potential impact on the insurance industry and its customers. Rising sea levels, intense hurricanes and frequent, larger forest fires could make insurance unaffordable for customers in high-risk areas. In fact, insurance premiums in states vulnerable to hurricanes are already increasing, and in some cases, insurers are exiting these markets altogether. Allianz and WWF intend to engage the insurance industry, governments, regulators and others to better manage the risks associated with climate change. One key recommendation for addressing the potentially adverse consequences of climate change in the US is for both governments and insurance companies to help correct market distortions and communicate appropriate signals to homeowners, businesses and consumers moving into high risk areas. The report points to the need by regulators to consider carefully the impact of programmes, like the […]

Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD.TO; NASDAQ:BLDP) has signed an agreement valued at approximately US$22 Million with General Hydrogen Corporation to supply 2,900 Mark 9 SSL(TM) fuel cells. The fuel cells will be integrated into General Hydrogen’s products which are being sold to customers converting from conventional lead-acid batteries in their materials handling fleets. Ballard expects to ship fuel cells ranging in size from 4 to 20 kilowatts, with roughly one-quarter of these units to ship in 2007, and the balance to ship in 2008. This year, through September 30, 2006, Ballard has shipped 100 Mark 9 SSL(TM) fuel cells. U.S. Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) on Friday introduced aggressive bipartisan global warminglegislation. “For years now on climate change, Washington keeps postponing the reckoning until the day after tomorrow. The world is changing and now the reckoning is real. Scientists are now warning that we are moving closer to several ‘tipping points’ that within a decade could make it impossible to avoid irreversible damage to the planet,” said Senator Kerry. “Each passing day brings yet more evidence that we are facing a climate crisis that demands immediate action. Senator Snowe and I are working to bridge the ideological divide to develop this bipartisan proposal and offer a roadmap for the future. Quite simply, this is a plan that actually does what the science tells us we have to do. Senator Snowe and I will be working to change the dialogue in Congress on this issue and make progress instead of just making noise.” “America has led the charge in overcoming every challenge of the 20th Century, and we must continue to lead the international community as we confront the growing problem of dramatic climate change in the 21st Century. By transforming our world energy strategy, and focusing […]
The National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition reports that there are now over 1,000 publicly and privately accessed E85 fueling locations in the United States. Below is an approximation of how many E85 outlets were in operation over the past several years: January 2003: 100 January 2004: 150 January 2005: 285 January 2006: 600 In October of 2005, the station count was 438; the number has more than doubled in 12 months. There are currently over 300 E85 outlets in Minnesota alone. Currently there are 946 publicly accessed and 56 private fleet accessed locations across the country, covering thirty-nine states. Arkansas and Massachusetts just recently added their first E85 facility to each of their states. “We are so pleased to achieve this milestone!” exclaimed Phil Lampert, Executive Director of the NEVC. “From a very humble beginning of a few stations in Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa, achieving this level of stations is significant. While 1,000 stations is only a drop in the so called ‘fueling station bucket’ (approximately 170,000 sites offer gasoline in the U.S.), recent progress has been incredible.” The National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition has a complete list of E85 refueling locations: Website: [sorry this link is no longer available]
