Millennium Cell Inc. (NASDAQ:MCEL) has established manufacturing capability for Hydrogen on Demand® fuel cartridges, a step which will broaden the company’s business model to include commercial sales of standard products. With this development, the company also has the capability to fulfill orders from licensees who package components into customized fuel cartridge designs. The company collaborated with The Dow Chemical Company and The Edison Welding Institute to develop manufacturing techniques and select materials for key fuel cartridge components. As a result, the company has constructed a pilot production line to produce fuel cartridges for commercial applications. Within the program, the key components were redesigned with new materials to achieve high reliability and performance at a low cost under military specification environmental conditions. Over the past few months, Millennium Cell shipped components for 25 fuel cartridges to Jadoo Power to support their contract deliverables with the U.S. Department of Defense. The company plans to ship next month over 25 additional units to the NextEnergy Center for independent testing as the final stage of manufacturing process validation. In 2006, Millennium Cell announced that it had agreed to supply up to 250 Hydrogen on Demand fuel cartridges for delivery in mid-2007 to South Carolina […]

All 132 Modell’s Sporting Goods stores now have an energy efficiency monitoring program which helps them control resource use. Lime Energy’s (OTCBB: LMEC) Maximum eMAC (equipment monitor and control) technology works to control heating, ventilation and air conditioning. 578 eMAC units have been installed resulting in an energy reduction of 7.4 million kilowatt hours per year, or an estimated 17% energy savings. Total dollars saved from the project is expected to exceed $840,000 a year based on “energy cost avoidance” at an average price of electricity in the region of 12 cents per kilowatt hour. The project began as a pilot at a Philadelphia area store. Following significant electrical savings, Modell’s extended the trial to another 10 locations which also produced favorable results. The company then expanded its installation program to include 27 stores and 112 eMAC units as part of a project involving utility incentive funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA. Last year the companies announced a full chain wide roll out of the technology. “We’ve found the eMAC technology to be very helpful to us in our operations by reducing our electrical consumption, maintaining a very comfortable shopping environment, and helping us […]

A unit of General Electric Co. has formed a partnership with power producer AES Corp. to develop projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. GE Energy Financial Services and Arlington, Va.-based AES will try to offset 10 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually by 2010. That reduction is the equivalent of the annual emissions of 2.2 million average cars, GE officials said. The partnership marks the entry of two major corporations into a fragmented market of companies involved in such projects, GE officials said. “Our capital, sales channels and risk management — along with AES’s expertise in project development — make for a powerful combination that will lead the U.S. carbon market,” said Kevin Walsh, managing director and leader of renewable energy at Stamford-based GE Energy Financial Services. The GE-AES partnership will focus primarily on reducing emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas with a warming potential 21 times greater than carbon dioxide. Projects to capture and destroy methane emissions would include agricultural waste, landfills, coal mines and wastewater treatment. The partnership may also pursue development of offsets through energy efficiency projects and electricity generation from renewable sources.
