After announcing its first silicon supply agreement, Hoku Scientific (NASDAQ: HOKU) stock shot up by 85.33%. The stock more than doubled this week before dropping about 20% on Friday. The company, which has a market cap of $91.52 million, has established a polysilicon division, which announced a $370 million supply contract with Sanyo. The contract begins in 2009 and covers the next seven years. HOKU will receive $2 million upon signing and now plans to build a plant capable of producing 2,000 metric tons of polysilicon per year. The construction costs will be around $260 million.

DayStar Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: DSTI), a solar manufacturer of CIGS Photovoltaic Foil(TM) products, has successfully restructured its $15 million senior convertible note originally issued in May of 2006. DayStar entered into an agreement with a new investor under which the original investor will transfer the debt, a Class B warrant and the associated rights of each to the new investor, who has agreed to certain modifications to these obligations. Under the terms of this agreement, the Company will make a payment to the original investor prior to the transfer in the form of cash and shares of the Company’s common stock, which issuance will constitute payment in full for all currently due amounts of principal and interest. Additionally, the original investor will receive an additional Class A Warrant to purchase 317,394 shares of common stock when permitted by Nasdaq’s rules. As part of this purchase, the Company has also entered into a Stock Purchase Agreement with another group of new investors under which the Company has agreed to sell 2,500,000 shares of common stock at a price of $2.00 per share when permitted by Nasdaq’s rules. Thursday night, January 18, a historic event took place. The House of Representatives began the process of ending the long petroleum energy siege. The House passed the “Creating Long-Term Energy Alternatives for the Nation (CLEAN) Act” by a vote of 264-163, which will repeal almost $14 billion in tax breaks for oil and natural gas companies and put that money toward renewable fuels and energy efficiency programs. The final piece in House Speaker Pelosi’s “100-hour agenda,” she said, “It’s just a beginning. I promise to do everything in my power to achieve energy independence … and to stop global warming.” Schwarzenegger Signs Low Carbon Fuel Standard In Calfornia, Governor Schwarzenegger signed the Executive Order establishing the world’s first greenhouse gas standard for transportation fuels – the Low Carbon Fuel Standard. 77% of U.S. voters believe that our nation must do more to promote green technologies, according to a poll by Zogby International and TechNet’s Green Tech Task Force. TechNet is a bipartisan political network of high tech CEOs promoting the growth of the innovation economy. “The magnitude of global energy and environmental challenges demands that we act now to implement a sound energy strategy based on U.S. innovation,” said John Doerr, TechNet Founder and Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. “TechNet is committed to working with the President and Congress to reshape our energy future.” Other poll results: 75% of respondents say their purchasing decisions have been influenced by a desire to save energy and improve the environment over the past year. 77% of the voting age populations say they have improved the energy efficiency of their homes. 56% say they save energy by making purchases over the Internet, and 50% say they telecommute or email to reduce travel. When asked their preferred alternative to oil and coal as energy sources, respondents chose: solar power (28%), biofuels (24%), wind (16%) nuclear energy (14%) and fuel cells (4%). Tesco ((TSCO.L), Britain’s largest supermarket chain, has pledged to spread the green message to its millions of customers while setting an example. The company is cutting its energy use by half and plans to offer critical sustainable productions to the public at low prices, in a 500 million pounds (US$987 million) program. In the U.S., the company is building what it says is the world’s biggest roof-top solar panel installation. Los Angeles-based Solar Integrated Technologies (SITq.L) won a $13 million contract to install solar panels at Tesco USA’s new distribution centre in Riverside, California. The first product to be highlighted will be compact flourescent light bulbs, which will be offered at half price. Tesco’s 100 million pound plan launched in April to cut energy use in stores by half by 2010, is already ahead of schedule. It’s expected to meet the target two years earlier – and plans to spend 500 million or more on proven low carbon technology to cut its energy use.
