Air Products (NYSE: APD), a leader in hydrogen fueling station technology and the world’s largest producer of hydrogen, and FuelCell Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq: FCEL), a leading manufacturer of fuel cell plants, announced that construction has commenced on an advanced hydrogen energy demonstration station. The station, funded in part by the United States Department of Energy (DOE), is to demonstrate a tri-generating green energy system capable of providing low-cost hydrogen, electric power and heat from one integrated unit. The new system will combine FuelCell Energy’s Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) power plants with Air Products’ advanced gas separation technologies. The DFC system produces reliable ultra-clean electric power and heat for cogeneration, as well as hydrogen for industrial applications and fuel cell vehicles. The system is designed to produce more than 250 kilowatts (kW) of green power and over 135 kilograms (about 300 pounds) of hydrogen per day. The system could provide hydrogen for smaller industrial users who routinely purchase liquid or gaseous hydrogen that currently must be delivered by truck. The DFC system could also be equipped to provide daily hydrogen fueling for approximately 35 fuel cell vehicles. The tri-generation system (hydrogen, electricity and heat) is designed to operate on renewable fuel sources, […]
Applied Materials, Inc. (Nasdaq:AMAT) has been awarded a milestone contract to provide T-Solar Global S.A. of Spain with Europe’s first thin film solar module production line using ultra-large 5.7m2 (2.2m x 2.6m) glass panels. The integrated line can drive down the cost of solar panel manufacturing while doubling rated factory output. For installations such as large commercial rooftops and solar farms — applications that are already growing rapidly as a result of the increased availability of lower-cost thin film solar panels — these ultra-large substrates are expected to enable an additional 25% reduction in the cost of solar electricity. Said Juan Laso, general manager of T-Solar, “This investment, promoted by a consortium of independent investors led by Marcial Portela, with Isolux Corsan construction, engineering and service group as the main shareholder, capitalizes on the rapidly expanding market in Spain for photovoltaic installations. Large-area thin film panels are ideally suited for these open space applications due to their performance in high temperature conditions and cost advantages for large-scale installations.” T-Solar is expected to produce panels using the thin film production line supplied by Applied by mid-2008. The contract provides that Applied will deliver a fully-integrated equipment line for a solar panel […]

General Compression, Inc has closed an initial round of funding for over $5 million. The funds will be used to accelerate the development of General Compression’s dispatchable wind technology. According to Don Hodel, Chairman of wind developer Summit Power, and a founding shareholder of General Compression, “By enabling wind farms to store and sell power at peak hours, General Compression will dramatically improve the profitability and market potential of wind power.” General Compression’s Dispatchable Wind Turbine System has three components: a compressed air wind turbine, a pipeline network that collects and stores compressed air, and a power plant of expanders and generators. By shifting the time when power is sold, the wind project can sell power on peak at a higher price, be more compatible with the needs of the grid, and become eligible for capacity payments. This solution will double the profitability of wind farms. The turbine is powered by a new compressor. When the wind blows, lift is created on the turbine blades, spinning the compressor inside the nacelle. The compressor pumps air to over 100 atmospheres of pressure and sends the air down the tower into an underground network of high-pressure pipes. The high-pressure pipeline network collects […]
