Seal Pups Sick of Being Clubbed, Die from Global Warming Instead!

Thousands of harp seal pups are assumed dead in Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence due to the lack of ice floes, which mother seals require to give birth and nurse their pups successfully. Experts with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)) have been carrying out daily surveillance flights over the region. They report that the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which is the annual birthing ground of hundreds of thousands of harp seals, is essentially devoid of both ice and seals. “The conditions this year are disastrous. I’ve surveyed this region for six years and I haven’t seen anything like this.” said Sheryl Fink, a senior researcher with IFAW. “There is wide open water and almost no seals. I only saw a handful of adult harp seals and even fewer pups, where normally we should be seeing thousands and thousands of seals.” The ice conditions this year are among the worst on record. Scientists have recorded below average ice conditions in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off Newfoundland for the past nine out of 11 years. In 2002, 75% of harp seal pups born in the Gulf died due to lack of ice before the hunt even began. This […]

1st Estimate of US Green Home Market Announced

According to McGraw-Hill Construction, the market for green homes is 0.3% of all homes in the U.S., a market of about $2 billion. The homes contain elements in three of five environmental building categories. The market has risen by 1% since 2005, up from .2%, according to the report, when homes were considered green if they had at least one green element, such as energy efficient appliances. “Though it’s still a small number, builders are getting it when it comes to the value of real green homes, and it appears homeowners are too,” says Harvey M. Bernstein, McGraw-Hill Construction vice president of Industry Analytics, Alliances and Strategic Initiatives. “It’s also powerful to find that people are really starting to commit to building truly green homes, moving away from just adding energy efficient appliances or one aspect that’s green. They’re paying attention to the holistic benefit of green.” Homeowners are extremely happy with their green homes, with 85% happier with their new green homes versus their previous non-green ones. And they’re not shy about sharing those feelings. 28% of green homeowners reported first hearing about green homes through word of mouth. The survey, conducted by McGraw-Hill Construction, part of The McGraw-Hill […]
