Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MXWL) reported a net loss of $4.3 million or $0.25 per share, on revenue of $12.6 million for its first quarter 2007, compared with a net loss of $7.5 million, or $0.45 per share, on revenue of $12.0 million for the same period in 2006. BOOSTCAP® ultracapacitor revenue for Q107 increased by 18 percent to $3.3 million, compared with $2.8 million for the same period in 2006, but declined, quarter-to-quarter from Q406, as a result of lower-than-expected shipments to certain large customers. The company expects ultracapacitor revenue to rebound in Q2, based on strong recent sales and bookings activity. “New heavy transportation and industrial design wins in North America, China and Europe have taken longer to move into production than we anticipated, so ultracapacitor sales in Q1 continued to be concentrated with a relatively small number of existing wind energy, transportation and industrial customers,” Balanson said. “Several of those existing customers consumed less product last quarter for a variety of reasons unrelated to ultracapacitors. While none of this alters our views about the company’s long term growth prospects, in the short term it puts our run rate a quarter or two behind where we had expected […]

Reported net income on a GAAP basis for the first quarter of 2007, which includes the transaction costs, was $1.6 million, or $0.05 per share, and reported Adjusted EBITDA was $11.9 million in the first quarter of 2007. Net sales increased 3.9 percent to $309.9 million, from $298.4 million in Q106. The contribution of seven new stores opened since the end of last year’s first quarter drove the overall increase in net sales and more than offset the sales impact of nine store closures in 2006. The Company reported a 0.3 percent increase in comparable store sales in the first quarter, compared with same-store […]
The American Wind Energy Association has been working closely with Congress on bills S. 673 and H.R. 1772 that, if passed, would provide a tax credit of $1500 per kilowatt of capacity for small wind systems. The bill also calls for 3-year accelerated depreciation and a credit carry-over for a customer unable to take advantage of the entire credit within a one-year period. There has been no federal support for small wind systems since 1985. Meanwhile, residential solar systems, which serve the same market as small wind, currently receive a 30% investment tax credit. The federal Production Tax Credit (PTC) applies only to large utility-scale wind projects, not to individuals who want to install their own wind systems for on-site power. Federal support would help broaden the small-wind industry on a national scale. There are now two Small Wind Investment Tax Credit bills in Congress – one in the House (H.R. 1772), and one in the Senate (S. 673) – that would provide individuals a tax credit when purchasing small wind turbines for their homes, farms, or small businesses. To become law, these bills must show a broad range of support from Members of Congress. Having your members of Congress add their names to […]
by Rona Fried, Ph.D.Howard Ruby, founder and chairman of Oakwood Worldwide, the world leader in temporary furnished apartments, is the latest corporate leader to get serious about global warming. I have a feeling that Howard is saddened by the same images that I see in my mind’s eye every single day: a polar bear struggling to walk on slushy ice. I turn my thermostat lower and lower, drive my car as little as possible, on and on, because to me, global warming is not abstract – it is the end for the polar bear. Ruby has guided Oakwood through its 47-year evolution. Today, the company operates throughout the United States, United Kingdom and Asia. He’s also a life-long outdoor photographer with over 60 years of experience. He’s traveled to the Arctic many times and taken hundreds of pictures of polar bears (this photograph is one example). One image shows a lone bear searching for food on nearly melted sea ice. The photos capture diminishing ice flows, which are critical to the mating and hunting practices, and the continued survival of polar bears. In one of the largest global warming exhibits ever, he displayed 70 prints, extending 600 feet (almost two […]
Before we jump on the nuke bandwagon, accepting a "simple" solution to a complex problem of how to supply energy, let's look deeper.
Newly emerging encouraging signs lead a number of analysts to believe positive changes are on the cusp of reshaping the energy paradigm in China.

A new study, “The Greening of Corporate America SmartMarket(TM) Report”, examines corporate America’s opinions on sustainability and green building. The landmark study, and the sixth in a series, reveals that not only are most U.S. corporate leaders interested in sustainability, but the majority are also examining proactive ways to make sustainability a consistent part of their companies’ missions. 18% of leaders surveyed are in the upper, or market transformational, stages, with 15% viewing sustainability as a competitive advantage and 3% actually driving their entire businesses through this value-driven lens. Over the next three years, more companies see themselves as entering this top tier, with nearly a third of the sample aiming to be market leaders in sustainability. Almost 60% of the top decision-makers in America’s most important corporations are seeing the value in sustainability concepts now, with that number expected to increase dramatically to 88% in just three years. “Today’s corporate leaders are already very conscious of using green practices when considering new facilities, and they expect green building to have an increasing impact in the future,” said Brad Haeberle, director of Marketing, Siemens Building Technologies, Inc., “Moreover, they believe that green building is in their company’s best interests, not […]
China, which could outpace the U.S. this year as the world’s greatest greenhouse gas emitter, says it opposes emissions caps and objects to much of the draft of the latest UN climate change report. China plans fast industrialisation for decades to come and says the government, “With uncertainties about climate change, there should not be premature or over-zealous setting of overall global carbon emissions caps.” The country doesn’t dispute the gravity of global warming – a recent official assessment noted that intensified droughts and floods, unpredictable weather and rising sea levels could threaten long-term development. Indeed, this week China sent 1000 firefighters to battle a forest fire across a 3 km (1.9 mile) area in its remote northeastern mountains. The State Forestry Administration said in January that China could face an “extremely serious” threat from forest fires this year because of global warming and the El Nino effect. Still, The Global Times, a newspaper run by the ruling Communist Party, accused Western politicians last week of using “climate terrorism” to undermine China’s quest for prosperity. China has been working hard to soften and change the wording of the soon-to-be released final UN climate change report. China’s climate change assessment recommends […]
