Spire, Gloria Solar Establish Joint Venture

Spire Corporation (Nasdaq: SPIR) has finalized with Gloria Solar Co., Ltd. (Gloria Solar), of Tainan, Taiwan, Republic of China, an affiliate of E-TON Solar Tech Co., Ltd., a joint venture to address the domestic solar photovoltaic (PV) systems market. The joint venture’s business will be named Gloria Spire Solar, LLC, and it will headquarter its operations in Bedford, Massachusetts. Gloria Spire Solar will conduct business as a PV Systems integrator within the United States, designing, marketing, selling, and managing installations of solar PV systems, with particular focus on the commercial/industrial and utility markets. Along with the establishment of this PV Systems venture, Gloria Solar purchased from Spire Corporation its existing building integrated PV module manufacturing facility, which will be operated by the Joint Venture in Bedford. Additionally, another 50MW Spire module manufacturing facility was ordered by Gloria Solar for its existing operations in Tainan, Taiwan, Republic of China, this additional capacity will also be available to support the Joint Venture. SOLON AG to Supply Modules to Balearic Island Solar Projects

SOLON AG has signed a supply agreement with the Spanish solar installation company Generacio Fotovoltaico S.L. to supply photovoltaic modules with an output of more than ten megawatts. The agreement envisages the delivery of photovoltaic modules for five projects that are to be rolled out on the island of Majorca by the end of 2008. The first of these projects is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2007 and the other projects will be completed during the course of 2008. A further three projects, with a combined volume of around six megawatts, are currently being negotiated with the same customer. This agreement represents further consolidation of SOLON AG’s market position in the Balearics, where there has been strong growth in the market for solar power stations since the local elections in May, particularly on the island of Majorca. Energy Bill To Use Renewable Power Sources

Broder WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 – The House passed a wide-ranging energy bill on Saturday that will require most utilities to produce 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar power. President Bush has vowed to veto the bill because it does nothing to encourage increased domestic production of oil and gas. “It’s a big, big deal,” said Representative Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts and a longtime member of the energy committee. “There has been no legislation like this for a generation.” The energy measure passed by a vote of 241-172, with 26 Republicans voting in favor and 9 Democrats opposed. Speaker Nancy Pelosi had made the bill one of her top legislative priorities for her first year as leader of the House Democrats. The bill allots money for the development of alternative fuels and for increased efficiency of appliances and buildings. It is also meant to spur research on methods to capture the carbon dioxide emissions that scientists say are largely responsible for global warming.
