SINGAPORE (AP) — Research aimed at disputing the scientific consensus on global warming is part of a huge public misinformation campaign funded by some of the world’s largest carbon polluters, former Vice President Al Gore said Tuesday. ‘There has been an organized campaign, financed to the tune of about $10 million a year from some of the largest carbon polluters, to create the impression that there is disagreement in the scientific community,’ Gore said at a forum in Singapore. ‘In actuality, there is very little disagreement.’ Gore likened the campaign to the millions of dollars spent by U.S. tobacco companies years ago on creating the appearance of scientific debate on smoking’s harmful effects. ‘This is one of the strongest of scientific consensus views in the history of science,’ Gore said. ‘We live in a world where what used to be called propaganda now has a major role to play in shaping public opinion.’ After the U.N. United Solar Ovonic LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENER) has been awarded a cost-shared, three- year cooperative agreement by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the development of low-cost building-integrated photovoltaic systems. Under the cooperative agreement, United Solar Ovonic is expected to receive $4.6 million in federal funding through the completion of its first project budget period, which will be implemented through June 2008. Upon successful completion of key project milestones and sustained execution of a viable business strategy, as much as $14.74 Million in additional DOE funding will be made available for continued implementation of the project through June 2010. Gaiam, Inc. (Nasdaq: GAIA) has announced results for its second quarter ended June 30, 2007. For the second quarter, Gaiam generated revenue of $52.4 million, an increase of 21.3% over the $43.2 million recorded in the same period last year. The internal growth rate was 18% on top of the 25% increase achieved in the second quarter of last year. Gross margin increased 190 basis points to 64.2% of revenue in the second quarter of 2007, from 62.3% in the same period last year, which in turn represented a 1370 basis point increase from 48.6% in the second quarter of 2005. The increase over 2006 was primarily due to higher margin international sales. Operating expenses as a percentage of revenue decreased to 67.9% in the second quarter of 2007, from 68.5% in the comparable period last year even after increased expenses related to Gaiam’s expanding online community. Gaiam reported a net loss for the second quarter of $0.3 million, or $0.01 per share, as compared to a net loss of $1.2 million, or $0.05 per share, for the second quarter of 2006.
