The renewable energy requirement starts at 2% of the power supply on June 1st, 2008, and ratchets up to 10% of the power supply on June 1st, 2015, then increases by 1.5% per year until 2025. The law requires 75% of the renewable power to come from wind energy. Other than wind power, the law also allows solar energy, biomass energy, hydropower that does not involve new construction or significant expansion of dams, and “other alternative sources of environmentally preferable energy.”The renewable energy requirement applies to electric utilities that serve at least 100,000 customers within the state. Capstone Signs Agreement With UTC Power

Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQ:CPST) and UTC Power (NYSE:UTX) are extending their collaborative relationship to develop and launch a 200kW microturbine product. Capstone CEO Darren Jamison said, “We are very pleased to announce this important business development with a well-respected company like UTC Power. As one of the market leaders in on-site power solutions, UTC Power’s continuing commitment to developing environmentally advanced products makes them the ideal strategic partner for Capstone.” UTC Power and Capstone Turbine Corporation have collaborated for several years in the development, marketing and sales of UTC Power PureComfort low-emission combined cooling, heating and power systems. These systems, which generate between 195 and 390 kW of electricity, capture exhaust energy from the Capstone MicroTurbines to power an absorption chiller, thereby producing seasonal cooling and heating in the same unit. Opta Minerals Moves Into Europe

Opta Minerals Inc. (TSX:OPM) has acquired 100% of the outstanding common shares of Newco a.s. (“Newco”) of Kosice, Slovakia and has also refinanced its credit facilities with a new lender. Newco is a supplier of proprietary desulphurization and refractory products with annualized revenues of approximately US $7.4 million. All products are produced to the specific requirements of the customers that Newco services within the European steel industry. The Company operates from a production facility in Kosice, Slovakia, employs approximately 22 people and maintains a very high level of customer service. The acquisition expands Opta’s business capabilities into Europe and complements existing operations which supply a wide range of desulphurization products in both the United States and Canada from operations in Indiana and Ontario. The purchase price was a combination of cash and one million common shares of Opta Minerals. The acquisition is expected to be immediately accretive to both Opta and SunOpta and will reduce SunOpta’s ownership position in Opta Minerals from 70.6% to 66.6%. In a related matter, Opta Minerals has refinanced its credit facilities, adding approximately US $18 million in available financing before the acquisition of Newco.
