Pest Control Goes 'Green' Nationwide

Green Shield Certified, a new seal of approval for eco-friendly pest control providers, was introduced nationally last week. Green Shield certification offers pest control companies and their customers a new standard for smarter, more effective pest control without unnecessary pesticides. The program is endorsed by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), and Physicians for Social Responsibility of Greater Los Angeles. “Green Shield Certified is the next generation of pest control service,” said Jonathan Kaplan, a Senior Policy Specialist at NRDC. “These certified companies are proving that knowledge and prevention can provide more effective, longer-lasting pest control than heavy-handed chemical sprays.” Green Shield Certified takes advantage of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), a system of thorough inspection, careful monitoring and non-chemical methods that are science-based and industry tested. With Green Shield Certified’s approach, many pest problems can be solved and prevented. These strategies combat pests by focusing on the source of the pest control issue and solving the problem at its root. IPM techniques, such as properly sealing cracks and crevices, eliminating places where pests hide, improving sanitation practices, and fixing leaking plumbing to remove access to water, provide long-lasting coverage that prevents pests […]

Zoltek Makes Strategic Acquisition in Mexico

Zoltek Companies, Inc. has purchased the Guadalajara, Mexico-based Crysel acrylic fiber manufacturing assets of Cydsa, a large publicly traded Mexican chemical and industrial company. Zoltek plans to retool and modify the newly acquired facility to supply Zoltek’s North American operations with low-cost precursor, the principal raw material used in manufacturing carbon fibers. Zoltek expects the facility will serve as a site for additional carbon fiber production lines supporting Zoltek’s strategic goal of achieving $500 million in annual sales of its high-performance commercial grade carbon fibers by fiscal year 2011. Zoltek will invest approximately $100 million to purchase the facility, to retool and modify the plant to produce acrylic precursor and to install the initial carbon fiber manufacturing facility. The Company is using a portion of the proceeds of its August 2007 secondary common stock offering, along with cash from operations, to fund the investments in the newly acquired plant. Zoltek expects that precursor production will begin by the end of fiscal 2008. “The new facility in Guadalajara represents the fastest and lowest cost alternative to increasing our precursor capacity and is a key building block in ramping up carbon fibers production in North America over the next several years,’ said […]

Wal-Mart Surpasses Goal to Sell 100M Fluorescents

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has surpassed its goal to sell 100 million compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) by the end of 2007. Over the lifetime of the CFLs, Wal-Mart estimates that these energy-saving bulbs will have the effect of taking 700,000 cars off the road, or conserving the energy needed to power 450,000 single-family homes. “We love the CFL and see the power this product has to unite consumers in the struggle against climate change. It makes sense for our customers because it saves them money and helps them live better,” said Andy Ruben, Wal-Mart vice president of strategy and sustainability. “This year’s incredible sales show that our customers make good choices when presented with products that are right for their families and the environment, and recognize that massive change is possible if each person commits an act as simple as changing a light bulb.” “Our members have really responded to this product and have seen the value in switching their homes and businesses to CFLs,” said Greg Spragg, executive vice president of merchandising and replenishment, Sam’s Club. “Almost half of Sam’s Club’s CFL sales this year have been to our small business members and we thank them for their support.
