eBay and Patagonia have joined 16 other major US brands to boycott the use of tar sands oil from Canada.
eBay will avoid fuels that come from refineries using tar sands, and Patagonia is identifying low carbon alternatives for its transportation systems.
The City of Bellingham is the sole city so far that refuses tar sand oil. It adopted guidelines that require the city to minimize purchasing fuel from refineries that take in that oil. Bellingham is one of two US gateway cities for Canada’s tar sands.
Brands that are eliminating tar sands oil from its transportation footprint are: Walgreens, Chiquita, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Seventh Generation, Bed Bath & Beyond, American Eagle Outfitters, LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics and Fifth & Pacific Companies, Inc. (formerly Liz Claiborne).
They are mostly doing this by asking their transportation providers to avoid buying fuels from refineries that accept tar sands oil.
