Cleantech Complex Planned for Los Angeles

A developer plans to turn a former school bus manufacturing plant in downtown Los Angeles into a cleantech industrial park.

The CleanTech Manufacturing Center is being built on speculation, hoping companies like solar, wind and electric vehicle equipment manufacturers will want to rent space there.

Developer Trammell Crow Co. is spending $40 million for the cleantech campus – three large buildings with 370,000-square-foot of space on 20 acres.

It fits nicely with the city’s vision of a CleanTech Corridor, "a 21st century community that synthesizes good paying jobs, affordable housing and accessible mass transit systems."

Clustered along four miles of the Los Angeles River, the community will transform the old, downtown industrial core into an incubator for green jobs and related technologies to grow the local economy and make LA a "cleantech capitol."

There are three anchors: CleanTech Manufacturing Center,  Clean Innovations Research Center and the Cornfields Arroyo Seco neighborhood – a LEED community (pictured below).

The idea is to support the entire value chain for the green economy, including research and development, technology design and prototyping, small business incubation, and full-scale manufacturing and assembly of clean technologies.

Companies housed in the industrial park would join with researchers and designers to develop and implement cleantech products and solutions to climate change challenges .. all in a vibrant, livable community.
