Congressional Progressive Caucus Declares Support for Repealing Citizen's United

The 78 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus voted unanimously this week in support of a constitutional amendment to reverse the Supreme Court Citizens United v. FEC decision.

The Caucus is the first in Congress to officially declare support for a constitutional amendment, which requires 38 states and  two-thirds of Congress to pass.

President Obama, 1,000 elected officials, New Mexico and Hawaii, and over 150 cities and towns have also officiallly declared support for repealing Citizens United, which opened the floodgates of anonymous corporate funding to political campaigns.

"The influence of money in politics is the single biggest threat to our democracy," says Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), co-Chair of the Progressive Caucus. "In this election cycle alone, Super PACs have raised almost $160 million and spent close to $90 million. And we still have six months until the election. Corporations are not people. And in America, democracy should never, ever be for sale."

The text says:

"We declare our support for amending the Constitution of the United States to restore the rights of the American people, undermined by Citizens United and related cases, to protect the integrity of our elections and limit the corrosive influence of money in our democratic process."

Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) has introduced a constitutional amendment and Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) introduced a similar amendment in the House.

Ben & Jerry’s has a "Get the Dough Out" of politics campaign to gain support for a constitutional amendment.

For the first time, institutional investors are asking corporations they hold shares in to completely refrain from making donations on political campaigns.

Unchecked corporate power is preventing us from transitioning to a green economy. The social, economic, and environmental crises sweeping the planet are inter-related symptoms born from the same root causes.
