Cincinnati Moves Toward 100% Renewable Energy

Cincinnati could be the first US city to be powered entirely on renewable energy, without any additional cost to taxpayers, reports UrbanCincy.

City officials told UrbanCincy they expect to approve a new method for acquiring electricity, which would favor renewables over coal, which currently supplies 85% of Cincinnati’s electricity. The new system would be in place this summer.

Under the new system, utilities would have to send out requests for proposals for electricity sources from conventional and renewable energy sources.

These days, renewable energy often comes in at the same or just slightly higher price, say 1%, than conventional sources when an aggregation method is used.

The city would then get to decide whether they want to pay the same or just slightly more for renewables.
