The publishers of Yellow Pages say they will reduce the paper used by 50% by the end of 2012, compared to peak levels in 2007.
The decrease in paper use is driven by changes in the size of directories (fewer paper-oriented advertisers), more efficient manufacturing, an industry-sponsored effort to reduce printed residential white pages, and a general decline in the number of directories distributed.
They note that directories are a small part of the overall waste stream – only 0.3% – compared to newspapers (3.2%), office paper (2.2%) and standard mail (1.9%), according to the EPA. Directory recycling rates increased 15.5 percent over last year through recycling programs, according to the latest EPA data.
Phone books are printed on recycled paper waste and leftover scraps of sawdust and woodchips from lumber production, and soy-based and non-toxic inks, glues and dyes.
